VP, Software Development & Engineering

The Vice President, Software Development and Engineering is the technical visionary and thought leader that leads the Software Engineering Group for the Madison Square Garden family of companies. This change agent is responsible for the software architecture, software deployment pipeline, engineering standards and testing/QA of all software platforms and digital products. The VP, Software Development be required to apply their depth of knowledge and expertise to all aspects of the software development lifecycle, as well as partner continuously with MSG stakeholders on a daily basis to stay focused on common goals. In addition, the VP will lead engineering teams that delivers best-in-class digital experiences for both external and internal customers. This leader will collaborate with business leaders in Marketing, Creative, Communications, Venues, Live and Productions departments to build and successfully deliver MSG’s digital roadmap and strategy. This position will drive the Engineering, Technical Product Management and QA teams to focus on a holistic consumer facing digital experience and friction-less engagement across desktop, mobile web, and mobile app platforms. This role is the innovation thought leader in the digital marketing, digital content and communications solutions space for the enterprise.


Specific Functions/Activities Summary

  • Responsible for the development, operation and delivery of all software and digital products for the MSG family of companies.
  • Defines the operating and delivery model for all software delivery and development trains – engineers with an ‘automation first’ mindset embracing the philosophy of delivering software incrementally on set release schedules.
  • Drives the automation of the full QA/Test lifecycle – moves to disqualify defective software quickly within the delivery pipeline.
  • Embraces the principles of “SecDevOps” and adopting security concepts and principles within the delivery methodology and pipeline. Persistently tests for security defects and controls within the development lifecycle.
  • Defines and evolves the adoption of software development frameworks (Spring, Play, Swift, etc). Drives continuity in the application of software development tools and standards. 
  • Develop plans for digital technology and products linked to MSG’s business plans so that digital engineering’s capabilities are responsive to the needs of the enterprise.
  • Drive an agile and innovative culture that supports the development MSG’s growth strategies and execution of projects approved to support the goals. Support P&L managers to develop and execute strategic plans and programs to support business objectives.
  • Leads with a ‘mobile first/digital first’ mindset in furthering MSG’s digital transformation journey. Partners closely with the Data and Analytics team to enable defined customer journey’s and other engagement strategies via the mobile application(s) and digital properties.
  • Drive data-based decision making by monitoring site conversion and demand generation metrics and provide to business in support of goals. Understand and predict emerging technology, service and functionality trends.
  • Partners closely the Infrastructure engineering and operations team(s) to ensure alignment on infrastructure platform and cloud development, scale out automation and appropriate technology placements. Engages on the development of an ‘end to end’ operational and monitoring models that looks at the performance of the applications, platforms and infrastructure holistically. 


Qualifications

  • Minimum of 12 years’ experience as an IT expert and leader / manager. Prior experience in digital product development and software engineering.
  • 5+ years of mobile development and deployment. Familiar with software standards and requirements for releasing mobile software on common commercially available models such as the Google Playstore and the Apple app store. 
  • BA/BS in electrical engineering, software engineering or Technology; advanced education is a plus.
  • 7-10 years experience working within cloud-based environments and developing integrations for common store services and capabilities with an emphasis on AWS and Microsoft Azure.
  • Ability to create a workplace environment that fosters trust, quality work and values diversity.
  • Strong executive presence and ability to lead cross-functional teams. Ability to act as a change agent including the effective management of change.
  • Strong senior-level leadership skills with proven ability to prioritize and deliver on multiple concurrent initiatives – on time and on budget. Excellent analytical and communication skills, ability to influence broad technical discussions and decisions, across different audiences and seniority levels.
  • Oversee highly complex projects with high visibility / high impact on the business. Proven experience in meeting deadlines and operating under tight time constraints. Experience in assessing issues and develop solutions through an integrated multi-disciplined decision-making approach.
  • Demonstrate a sense of urgency, thoroughness and quality towards assigned tasks/goals. Constructively challenges the status quo and uses disruptive thinking to positively push business partners.

Education

Candidates who have completed 60 credits of college-level coursework (representing 2 years), or have shown similar self-development through certifications, trade school coursework, etc. are preferred.
