The VP Strategic Financial Planning, Analysis reports to the EVP of Finance, Strategy and Investor Relations. This position oversees the coordination of the Voya Health Solutions operating budgets, forecasts, strategic financial planning, and financial analysis. This role partners with the business along with other functions to profitably grow our Health Solutions segment.  This person will lead a team to understand accounting and financial results, including preparation of financial analytics that explain financial results and confirm the reasonableness and accuracy of the results. They will manage new strategic projects and assist with the identification, development, and implementation of business development opportunities for the effective growth of Voya Financial.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

Operating Budgets and Forecasts:

  • Develops the annual budget presentation to Finance and the business, as well as the periodic forecasts and updates to EVP of Finance, CFO and BU CEO. Recommends targets and supporting analyses. Directs the development, implementation, and maintenance of the annual operating budget processes. Oversees the coordination and consolidation of budgets with EVP Finance, CFO, BU CEO and other stakeholders.
  • Develops strategies to expedite financial and statistical forecasting, and budget projections. Evaluates existing budget procedures/process and recommends changes to ensure a timely and successful budget development process. Plans and participates in the enhancement of the budget process to support operational and financial decision-making and management.
  • Manages the delivery of technical, informational and problem-solving assistance to administration, department heads and other levels of management during the budget preparation process and throughout the operational year. Develops, with the EVP Finance, budget-related policies and procedures, and oversees their communication to departments and other levels of management. Manages the Directors developing the individual entity budgets. Coordinates common assumptions, timetables, and intercorporate transactions.


Budgets and Projections:

  • Develops, with the EVP Finance, the annual budget and five-year projections of spending, and related funding sources, and generates the integrated five-year forecast of income statements, cash flows and balance sheets.
  • Meets regularly with representatives of the disciplines that provide input to the costing and evaluation of Health Solution and Voya projects: IT, Facilities, Technology, and Finance.
  • Oversees the tracking of commitments of spending on projects. Supports the development of depreciation estimates of forecasted spend.


Financial Reporting and Analysis:

  • Reviews and interprets monthly financial and statistical data and prepares written evaluations for CFO and BU CEO. Develops strategies to ensure complete and accurate variance reporting. Analyses financial performance to determine whether objectives and criteria are achieved. Seeks opportunities to bring greater understanding of financial performance to non-financial departments and employees.
  • Manages the evaluation of proposed new or expanded programs, or the closing of programs. Directs and mentors’ staff on the development of major business plans or simpler cost/benefit analyses, including service line analyses and investment evaluations. Maintains and develops the decision criteria and data to support service line growth and related decision-making.
  • Works closely with Directors and Senior Management in the development of measurable objectives and criteria for managing the financial operations of Voya Health Solutions business. Participates in the development of KPI reporting.
  • Oversees generation of the annual market share analyses, including the maintenance of standard definitions and methodologies utilized in the analyses. Manages the development of other market share assessments, ensuring consistency of methodology and interpretation.
  • Responsible for analyses of key internal and external trends in payors, demographics, revenue sources, labor costs, and similar drivers of financial outcomes.
  • Collaborates with EVP Finance and CFO to define requirements and fulfill specific informational needs through the development of dashboards and KPI’s, as well as other business information needed on an ad hoc basis. Directs the development of departmental productivity standards and financial models for measuring productivity.


Financial Applications:

  • Manages a team responsible for optimizing the use of business intelligence platforms in order to enhance the functionality of core transaction systems, by translating data into actionable management reports. Supports the recognition and recommendations of cutting-edge business technology and process improvements to suggest best practices.
  • Oversees the automation of routine manual finance processes to improve productivity and reliability in Finance.
  • Responsible for smooth transitions during all business analytic system installs and upgrades in partnership with information technology.
  • Coordinates and defines end user training and evaluation for the business application platforms.
  • Ensures technical knowledge of all deployed business analytic platforms maintained by the organization.
  • Reviews the development of curriculum and the teaching of educational seminars.


Business Development:

  • Supports screening of potential business deals by analyzing market strategies, deal requirements, potential and financials, evaluating options, resolving internal priorities and provides recommendations to EVP of Finance.
  • Evaluates and manages the preparation of business plans relating to new business ventures, including the assessment of joint ventures and similar business proposals. Coordinates use of internal and external market data, and other resources to inform the development of an appropriate business plan and sustainable business model.


Other Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates and executes ad hoc requests from senior management in a timely, accurate and insightful way.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Information Systems, Actuarial Science or Accounting.
  • 12+ years’ FP&A experience in Financial Services industry preferably with a public company including 5 years managerial experience.
  • Knowledge of FP&A and Management reporting, generally accepted accounting principles, spend reporting.  Group Benefits experience a plus.
  • Advanced knowledge of electronic spreadsheets and database management systems.
  • Purpose driven with strong interpersonal and communication skills, and innovative approaches to problem solving with the ability to think creatively, leverage technology, and collaborate at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to translate complex financial concepts to a wide audience and translate data into actionable information.
  • Experience in transformation improvement projects, including centralization of functions and simplification of processes required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to communicate with the highest levels of the organization; ability to effectively and clearly communicate and influence others
  • A self-starter, self-motivated, self-disciplined and performance-driven
  • Proven ability to develop a strong team of high-caliber leaders / business partners capable of leading work, driving issue resolution and fostering engagement.
  • Experience navigating and leading in environments of transformation, change and disruption. Prior experience driving finance/accounting teams through transformation / M&A integration preferred
  • Actively involved in industry and well versed in financial reporting best practices and current standard changes.
  • Change management skills including the ability to work and lead a team in a dynamic environment
