The Organization:

The Data and Search teams build an end-to-end real estate data platform that powers all of the Compass products on our web and mobile platforms. These teams are critical to the ingestion, conversion, and data endpoint services of all our internal and external data sources that drive our customer experiences for search and data pages. Our teams help deliver data and search interfaces in a timely, accurate manner to power our internal and external websites for consumers and agents.


About The Role:

As a Vice President of Engineering at Compass, you will be responsible for setting the direction and driving major strategic and engineering initiatives while supporting our company’s goals. You will work to deliver world-class engineering outcomes for our customers while managing multiple teams to ensure success of technical execution across the highest impact projects on our data and search roadmaps in partnership with our product and design teams. You will identify strategic initiatives and opportunities for improvement, while working on projects that impact the highest priorities of our technology roadmap and the business, all while collaborating cross-functionally with multiple teams. Engineering Vice Presidents influence groups outside of their organization and deliver results that move the needle at the organizational level and impact company-wide goals. This task will require you to collaborate with multiple engineering, product, and design teams within Compass.


You will be a leader that influences everything from recruiting to operational excellence in your organizations. You understand platforms and have built them before. You know how to scale up and create a world-class engineering culture.


At Compass You Will:

  • Responsible for driving the strategy and execution of our data and search roadmaps, with operational excellence as one of highest priorities and measures of success
  • Own and execute against organizational business and product OCRs and metrics
  • Drive your teams to be data driven with data and search quality as one of the pillars of success
  • Be a member of the senior management team to help drive organizational impact, product development, and operational excellence 
  • Collaborate with technical leaders and stakeholders to the Data and Search organizations to understand, develop, and implement innovative data and search experiences and capabilities to transform our operational processes
  • Identify business opportunities and define technical vision for your teams and the company
  • Be a domain expert on search and data solutions, architectures, and an empathetic partner to our customers
  • Inspire, recruit, and mentor a team of high performing engineers and senior leaders
  • Hire, recruit, and retain a world-class team balancing FTEs and contingent staff
  • Lead cross-functional teams to identify and prioritize critical business areas where data, search, and related solutions can drive significant business benefits.
  • Develop a scalable engineering culture for hundreds of top talent engineers by leveraging modern principles of decoupled systems and automated CI/CD/testing/monitoring to drive efficiencies.


What We Look For

  • Proven track record of growing and managing multiple medium to large size teams (both in-person and remote) in multiple geographies and timezones
  • Experience managing large scale data and/or search systems in rapid growth environments with proven scalability
  • Demonstrated building top talent and high-performance teams, directing multiple teams and engineering/automation managers
  • Extensive experience with owning and driving data pipeline strategies, ETL (Airflow), transformation, API services, search technologies (ElasticSearch, Solr, Lucene)
  • Experience with data warehousing (Redshift, Snowflake), data quality tooling & measurement frameworks
  • Experience with modern frameworks (e.g., Go/React), distributed computing platforms (kubernetes), and public cloud platforms (e.g., AWS)
  • Familiarity with containerization, microservices architecture, continuous integration, and delivery
  • Leadership on multiple well-known products throughout their life cycles, from idea conception to product release and maintenance
  • Proven success in working with product, marketing, business, and operations divisions
  • Examples of engineers for whom you've guided their technical and career progress
  • BA/BS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience, MS/Ph.D. preferred
