VP of Data

Remote (United States)

As our VP of Data, you will report to the CTO and oversee all four of our data teams: Data Engineering, Data Science, Data Analytics, and Content Analytics.


On the infrastructure and data science side, your team will own all data infrastructure for The Athletic: MySQL and DynamoDB production databases, analytics data streaming pipeline using Kubernetes, Kafka, EMR (Spark), S3, Airflow, DBT, and Redshift, all hosted in AWS. Among other things, the teams you oversee will work on: scaling our data infrastructure, building and deploying data science models, creating data models, and monitoring data quality in supporting our product and analytics teams.


On the analytics side, the Data Analytics team is primarily responsible for creation/analysis of business metrics and its members typically embed directly with our product teams, working closely with PMs and engineers. The Content Analytics team works directly with our editorial team to produce data and analytics for our writers and give them feedback on and insight into how their content is performing.


Responsibilities

  • Be a leader within the company, responsible for the output of all data-focused teams within the company: Data Eng, Data Science, Data Analytics, Content Analytics. Architect solutions, provide mentorship, give guidance, communicate across teams and departments.
  • Partner with Product, Marketing, and Engineering teams to build and deploy pipelines and features backed by machine learning and modern data toolsets.
  • Inform, influence, support, and execute our product decisions.
  • Manage development of data resources, gather requirements, organize sources, and support product launches.
  • Build/maintain/own dashboards, metrics, and alerting to monitor the performance of our data quality.
  • Own data ecosystem including stability of internal structure and connection with external data vendors.
  • Articulate, evangelize and pursue a long-term vision for Data at The Athletic, and foster a data-driven culture of innovation throughout the company.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Physics, Engineering, or related quantitative field.
  • 10+ years data experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in leading data engineering / data science / data analytics teams.
  • 5+ years of experience with Python, SQL or other programming languages.
  • 2+ years of experience with Docker, AWS, or similar environment.
  • Experience initiating and driving projects to completion with minimal guidance.
  • Experience communicating to executive team and project stakeholders.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Kafka, Kubernetes, Redshift, and Spark.
  • Experience with large data sets and distributed computing (Hive/Hadoop).
  • Experience with data science or managing a data science team.
  • Experience with DBT and other BI data modeling tools.


The annual base salary range for this role is $200,000.00 - $300,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
