What You’ll Do

  • Identify and implement a Data Privacy framework that aligns to AppFolio’s company culture and risk appetite.
  • Gain sufficient knowledge of AppFolio’s data infrastructure in order to intelligently assess the security and privacy of information processing, transmission, and storage.
  • Create and maintain strong relationships across AppFolio business units, including Legal, Compliance, Software Engineering, Data Operations, and Internal Audit.
  • Contribute meaningfully to AppFolio’s technical audit requirements, including SOC1, SOX, PCI, and Experian Third-Party Security standards.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with Data Privacy legislation, including the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and similar.
  • Partner with Legal & Compliance to deliver Data Privacy training to AppFolio employees.
  • Lead and expand AppFolio’s Third Party Security Evaluation program.

  • Communication & Presentation Skills. Speaks and writes clearly, concisely, and articulately. Provides clear communication regarding our strategy (what we are doing, and why).
  • Business Acumen. Understands how our business works and is knowledgeable in current and future practices, policies, trends, and relevant technologies. Grasps complexities and connections among problems or issues, and is able to prioritize elements that will most drive AppFolio success.
  • Risk-intelligent Decision Making. Understands and can clearly communicate the trade-offs between business risks and aggressive goals. Empowers AppFolio to succeed while protecting the security and privacy of sensitive data.
  • Collaboration. Understands and embodies the importance of collaboration over conflict. Able to find mutually agreeable solutions to difficult issues.


Must-Haves 

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in the Information Security field
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in leading information security or data privacy engineering teams and organizations
  • Strong understanding of data privacy standards
  • Strong experience hiring and developing engineering talent
