VP Compliance

Vancouver, BC

Reporting directly to the Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary, the Vice President, Compliance will be responsible for designing, implementing and overseeing the ongoing management of a corporate compliance framework, in support of the organization’s existing Ethics and Compliance Program and broad compliance mandate in the jurisdictions in which we operate.

 

The successful candidate will have a successful track record of working cross-organizationally with key stakeholders to implement effective yet agile governance practices in the area of operational compliance. The role will be responsible for:

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for developing and implementing a compliance framework and function, working cross-organizationally with other functions with compliance responsibilities including Regulatory Affairs, Health and Safety, Quality, and Internal Audit
  • Hiring, leading and mentoring the compliance team and cross functional teams in relation to ethics and compliance activities. This includes working to establish a powerful culture that is integrated with Aurora’s operations and serving as a strategic role within the Company
  • Working with each respective department, catalogue the Company’s compliance requirements and set benchmarks across the entire business
  • Lead the development and maintenance of policies, frameworks, standards and protocols related to the Company and its subsidiaries, under applicable compliance programs. (for example: Privacy Compliance)
  • Manage the operations and reporting of the organization’s Ethics and Compliance Program and Oversight Committee, including developing reporting mechanisms, agendas, and thought leadership on a quarterly basis, working with compliance owners and other members of the ELT
  • Conduct periodic testing of compliance controls, assess findings and address both the strengths and deficiencies with key stakeholders
  • Collaborate with the ELT and departmental teams to lead and develop the compliance strategy in alignment with Aurora’s values, corporate goals, and risk tolerance
  • Facilitate training for key compliance areas across Aurora as identified by management and the ELT
  • Lead and assist with the planning and execution of other compliance and advisory type of projects
  • Prepare periodic reports to the Ethics and Compliance Committee, ELT and Audit Committee
  • Attend and participate in meetings as necessary

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Exemplary problem-solving and analytical skills with a proven ability to create and implement thoughtful solutions
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent attention to detail for critical analysis capabilities
  • Experience dealing with regulatory matters and investigations
  • Excellent ability to understand, analyze and interpret regulatory requirements
  • Ability to suggest appropriate recommendations to senior/executive leadership and effectively support those recommendations.
  • Positive attitude requiring the skills of a “working, hands-on leader” with an ability to handle a very wide range of responsibilities and duties
  • Demonstrated experience in leading others in a team setting with a proactive attitude

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Proven experience in managing risk and compliance issues within a regulated business and implementing such compliance programs
  • Minimum 10 years of experience, preferably within compliance or law.
  • Minimum 5 years of proven experience in regulatory compliance, audit, quality assurance or similar risk management area, including monitoring adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Undergraduate university degree in a related field; post-graduate degree preferred.
  • Professional certification (e.g., Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP)
  • Experience interacting with regulators
  • Preference given to experience in consumer-packaged goods/medical/ pharma industries
