Vice President, US Media

Global Advertising and Brand Management (GABM) creates worldwide demand for American Express, driving business through innovative marketing, messaging, partnerships, and experiences. Within GABM the Global Media team develops customer-focused, innovative media programs across markets; creating premium experiences for our members and building demand among prospects.


This role will lead and develop holistic communication plans for the US market and will be responsible for a broad range of activities related to the management and execution of media across all channels. Reporting to the Vice President of Global Media, the Vice President, US Media will directly oversee the US Media team and will need to stay on the edge of understanding and application of new ways of engaging consumers. Collaboration with colleagues across all lines of business is a core function of the position and requires excellent external relationships with agency and media partners. Exceptional leadership skills – strong communication, problem solving, organizational and delegation skills is a requirement.


Specific accountabilities would include:

  • Provide strategic marketing direction and oversight for US based media and communication planning, buying, partnerships, and negotiations that ensure all marketing objectives are achieved
  • Create an environment of collaboration, partnership, learning and sharing that can help drive employee engagement and development
  • Manage agency partner teams ensuring the strategies and plans deliver against business objectives, create impact, and differentiate American Express in the marketplace
  • Responsible for campaign measurement and insights for all media campaigns and brand activation initiatives
  • Oversight of media investment management and billing – process authorizations and bills, management of media budgets for specific brands / products
  • Departmental leadership of key thought leadership areas/emerging media challenges
  • 10+ years experience in media or communications planning, with a consistent track record for success and innovation
  • Thorough knowledge of media agencies including all forms of media planning and buying concepts and processes
  • Executive-level communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Results/metrics-driven
  • Proven leadership skills, analytical thinking and strategic agility; ability to work effectively within a global matrixed organization in partnership with key business partners, internal and external
  • Knowledgeable and well versed in current industry trends
  • Media agency and/or brand experience is required, ideally working with data, ad technology and biddable channels
  • Proven quantitative skills, able to translate— data, performance, consumer, competitive, industry—into insights and action
  • Strong relationship building skills at all levels; comfortable in a collaborative, performance oriented environment
  • Detail oriented, creative, upbeat individual with strong leadership and influence management skills
