Tax Manager

Toronto, ON

Reporting to the Senior Manager –Tax Planning and Research, the Canada Tax Manager will be responsible for driving feasibility analysis and implementation in support of business initiatives and transactions by liaising with external tax advisers and leaders within HBC, modeling expected tax outcomes, ensuring proper financial and tax reporting, and monitoring legislative and regulatory changes


In addition, the Canada Tax Manager will be responsible for researching Canadian and international tax issues in support of the Tax Compliance team for purposes of quarterly tax provisions, tax return filings, and Canadian corporate income tax audits.


The Canada Tax Manager will also be responsible for supporting the Senior Manager with US research and analysis through internal teams or professional services providers.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Manage tax transactions to support day-to-day business initiatives and  transactions.
  • Perform modeling in support of transactions and business initiatives.
  • Liaise with  internal and external parties to complete feasibility analysis, support tax research and analysis and drive implementation.
  • Update transfer pricing reports and preparation of any transfer pricing journal entries.
  • Work with Finance to support and document intercompany settlements.
  • Involvement in preparing conceptual journal entries related to executed transactions.
  • Responsible for research to support the Tax Compliance Team in their provision and tax return preparation as well as audit defense and dispute resolution.
  • Provide  support for complex compliance, including partnership returns, tax elections and T1134/5s.
  • Support the Canadian Tax Compliance team by being involved in the review of various information returns such as T106s to ensure consistency and completeness with the transfer pricing documentation and cross-border transactions.
  • Provide reviewer assistance as required in regards to CbC reporting and T1134s.
  • Support with cross border tax audits and audits in foreign jurisdictions such as preparing and/or reviewing responses to audit queries/notices.
  • Monitor and summarizing/modeling impact of changing tax laws and ensuring compliance thereof.
  • Assist with special projects, as needed

 

What You Will Need:

  • The Canada Tax Manager is results driven and has the ability to connect with various internal and external parties in various disciplines to get things done.
  • They have strong problem solving and analytical skills, exceptional written and verbal communication skills and are capable of effective decision making.
  • They have demonstrated initiative, customer orientation and teamwork competencies. 
  • Demonstrated adaptability, flexibility and ability to work as part of a team or in an individual capacity.
  • Passion for tax and stays current with changes to tax laws in Canada and the United States. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree and has an accounting designation such as CPA, CA
  • Masters of Tax or completion of CPA In-depth Tax Course
  • A minimum of 5 years in a tax role and experience working in Canadian international tax with preference to experience working in a Big 4 environment.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and interpret financial information.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Capable of completing duties within set deadlines while still ensuring that the deliverables produced are accurate.
  • Results oriented, must be willing to take ownership of all assigned responsibilities.
