Job Description

In this position you will be a fully-qualified contributor who has thorough knowledge and understanding of materials as related to sustainability. GM has a corporate goal of utilizing 50% sustainable materials in vehicles by 2030. You will use a broad technical knowledge, training and experience to assist GM in completing this goal.

Job Description:

Sustainable materials engineers provide materials engineering support to the Global Sustainability effort within Engineering.

  • Conduct LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) with knowledge of GABi, Simipro, IPoint types of analysis tools.
  • Interact regularly with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, CAE engineers, suppliers, purchasing and other materials engineers to achieve sustainability targets.
  • Assist in the development of tracking tools and LCA analysis tools for sustainable materials.
  • Provide materials-related content for engineering standard work, including BOM, BOD, BOP, SOR templates, drawings, and quality documents
  • Support evaluation and approval of sustainable materials suppliers
  • Understand new materials technology and processes
  • Provide material specifications and establish performance requirements
  • Resolve environmental issues
  • Resolve materials-related Issues
  • Troubleshoot complex problems, often with incomplete information, to arrive at a root cause
  • Support/lead advanced material technology development
  • Travel as required, including international


Additional Job Description

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years' experience as a materials engineer or metallurgist or related engineering
  • Thorough knowledge of industry recognized material standards - GM, SAE, ASTM, ISO, JIS, etc.
  • Familiarity with LCA software and it's usage
  • Familiarity of vehicle design process
  • Understanding of recycle industry including chemical recycling of polymers.
  • Strong analytical skills - for data analysis, design of experiments, failure analysis, and problem-solving
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of computer software as it pertains to engineering and LCA
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
  • Able to manage several projects at the same time and prioritize as necessary


Education and Training:

  • BS Degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Materials Science or other related engineering degree


Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Familiarity with the recycle industry and sustainable materials including bio-materials
  • 5 years' experience
  • Manufacturing or industry experience
  • Materials laboratory experience
  • Polymer and/or elastomer experience
  • Advanced engineering or science degree(s)
