Sustainability Lead

Marsh McLennan is looking for a Sustainability Lead who will be responsible for managing and expanding sustainability operations and delivering on the company’s net-zero commitment. The position will lead development and implementation of our science based climate commitments across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 and be responsible for working across the company to drive and implement emissions reduction strategies. This work requires deep internal partnership and integration of sustainability goals and metrics into core business functions.


The Sustainability Lead is a newly created senior level position on a growing team, which sits within Legal, Compliance & Public Affairs and reports to the Corporate Secretary & Deputy General Counsel. This role will interact with senior management including Marsh McLennan’s Executive Committee and Board of Directors. The position is based in New York City. Primary Responsibilities:

In this position, the Sustainability Lead will oversee and implement enterprise-wide environmental sustainability strategy development and embed environmental sustainability into business and corporate functions to reach net-zero targets, specifically:

  • Contribute sustainability expertise and insights in leadership strategy discussions and collaborate with function leaders (specifically Real Estate, Travel, Procurement and Technology) for sustainability strategy implementation and decarbonization planning
  • Lead the company’s sustainability operations working group
  • Prepare presentations and briefing materials for senior management including Marsh McLennan’s Executive Committee and Board of Directors
  • Oversee and work with external stakeholders including consultants and industry organizations to move our sustainability strategy forward
  • Collaborate with ESG reporting and communications teams to communicate progress on sustainability commitments
  • Manage all emissions and sustainability data collection and organization
  • Develop roadmaps, project requirements and milestone schedules to reach sustainability goals


What you need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 8 years or more sustainability experience including sustainability strategy development, implementation, carbon accounting and target setting
  • Deep familiarity with sustainability ratings and reporting frameworks including, but not limited to, Science Based Targets initiative, Net Zero, TCFD and CDP
  • Deep understanding and familiarity with carbon offsets, RECs, and strategies to reduce and avoid emissions
  • Experience initiating and leading carbon transition innovation processes and projects
  • Experience mobilizing internal and external stakeholders and resources on collaborative sustainability innovations
  • Experience with data collection and organization
  • Understanding of current sustainability challenges, sustainability certifications and industry groups
  • Proven leadership and collaboration experience and ability to work and influence transformational change in a mindful, diplomatic manner
  • Excellent writing, project management, communication and interpersonal skills, detail oriented
  • Experience using sustainability-related databases and tools
  • Results oriented, data driven, able to drive impact reductions year over year
  • Experience building, running, and integrating company-wide sustainability initiatives

The applicable base salary range for this role is $110,000 to $183,200.


The base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, and education. Decisions will be determined on a case-by-case basis. In addition to the base salary, this position may be eligible for performance-based incentives.
