Sustainability Communications Manager

Remote Pittsburgh, PA

We're excited to announce a position of Sustainability Communications Manager to be a key member of Alcoa’s global External Affairs Team. The role will report directly to the Vice President of Corporate Communications with a dotted line to the Vice President of Sustainability. This position offers an opportunity to combine strong storytelling skills with an in-depth knowledge on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance.


The professional will become part of an impactful team working to realize the company's Vision to reinvent the aluminum industry for a sustainable future. The main goal is to plan, develop, and deploy communications that align with Alcoa’s Purpose, Vision, Values and strategic priorities, serving as the lead writer and front-line editor for sustainability-focused content.


This position will also serve as the primary point of contact with Alcoa’s Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) leadership team.


Main Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive sustainability communications strategy with measurable outcomes, aligning with Alcoa’s Purpose, Vision, Values, and critical initiatives.
  • Identify and develop compelling, engaging content that demonstrates the Company’s positive ESG performance. This includes content for both earned and owned channels - Sustainability Report, web site, social media accounts, and materials for conferences and internal/external events.
  • Work with both traditional and social media, and the creation of external presentations designed to advance Alcoa’s thought leadership in sustainability.
  • Provide communications counsel to a broad group of executives and partners, including communicators in the field, to amplify and elevate sustainability-focused successes.
  • Lead the production of the annual Sustainability Report, working with internal teams and contract writers and designers.
  • Coordinate the sustainability section of our external web site.
  • Review and update sustainability reporting processes and systems to align with standard methodologies and industry expectations, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals, International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), and Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).
  • Prepare and review briefing documents for Alcoa’s leadership on ESG related activities and initiatives.


About you:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism, communications, public relations, or related field with expertise in sustainability
  • 8+ years of experience in corporate communications, preferably in a large, international organization
  • Experience in handling communications related to corporate ESG performance and general knowledge of requirements from Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Dow Jones Sustainability Indices, CDP Global, and the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures
  • Strong project management and interpersonal skills
  • Proven excellence in written communication, published via external channels
  • Experience in developing communication campaigns that include earned media
  • Strong, journalistic storytelling (clear and concise) that can be packaged for a range of platforms
  • Validated problem-solving skills to collect, interpret and collate sophisticated information
  • Flexible work location in the US.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with evolving, global trends in sustainability with a particular emphasis on the mining and metals industry.
  • Understanding of ESG rating agency requirements and other partners requiring ESG related information
  • Knowledge of evolving communications trends and platforms, including digital technologies
  • Proficiencies in more than one language, with specific focus on French and/or Portuguese
  • Experience in using change management strategies to drive business results
