Sustainability Assistant

New York, NY

The Sustainability Assistant role is an integral part of the Madewell Corporate Social Responsibility team, and contributes to the execution of the company’s environmental and social sustainability strategic plans. This role will be supporting the delivery and tracking of Madewell’s Do Well responsible retail initiatives and commitments, ensuring that all our supply system workers are treated fairly and with respect, and that all our products, supply chain, and operations contribute to a healthy environment.

 

Raw Materials/Product Sustainability

  • Support the implementation of the sustainable raw material strategy in collaboration with internal functions including Design, Sourcing, Production, Merchandising, and Marketing
  • Contribute to create sustainability knowledge across all levels and functions of the organization
  • Contribute to address internal requests about raw materials and product sustainability attributes, facilitating internal communication about preferred fibers and material classification
  • Track, monitor and report on each division’s sustainability goals progress in line with the broader sustainability strategy, tracking environmentally preferred materials uptake and progress, including our Raw Materials Mapping
  • Maintain seasonal records of sustainable/Do Well product charts (Sustainable Product Master Lists), including specific sustainability attributes for each product
  • Support with our Regenerative Agriculture initiatives

 

Verification, Integrity & Reporting

  • Work with business leads and vendors to support the integrity of sustainable product claims by reviewing verification documents, standards and utilizing key certifications to ensure substantiation of sustainability claims
  • Support the implementation of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s Higg Index suite of tools in collaboration with our Hong Kong team
  • Support with Better Cotton, USCTP and Good Cashmere Standard platform management
  • Support in the development of the annual Textile Exchange Benchmarking analysis for Preferred Raw Materials
  • Develop quarterly reports, including premium payments, for external partners in social and environmental sustainability
  • Support with invoice processing, administrative and legal tasks

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in fashion or business management, environmental or social science, sustainability or related fields
  • Previous related work experience/internships in supply chain, product development, fabric/raw material, and/or sustainability/corporate social responsibility in the apparel industry preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to foster and maintain collaborative relationships with internal business partners and with overseas teams
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time
  • Team player with the capability to work across different stakeholder groups and hierarchies
  • Strong Excel savvy for creating data-driven dashboards, as well as Power Point knowledge for effective presentations
