JOB SUMMARY

  • The Sustainability Strategy Sr. Business Consultant will develop Southwest’s corporate Environmental Sustainability strategy and achieve Southwest’s sustainability and carbon emissions goals externally through industry alignment, relationship development, and thought leadership. The role requires a deep understanding of environmental issues and challenges in the aviation industry, experience liaising and developing strong relationships both in the industry as well as within a large, corporate environment, and a history of being a thought leader in this space. The position reports to the Director, Environmental Sustainability and is part of the Supply Chain Management organization.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Represent Southwest Airlines in industry organizations, e.g., A4A, IATA/ CORSIA, and other groups, e.g., World Economic Forum Clean Skies for Tomorrow Coalition, to share best practices and understand the rapidly evolving landscape, both domestically and internationally
  • Build and maintain relationships with key internal, e.g., Governmental Affairs, and external stakeholders, e.g., NGOs, CSR associations, trade associations, and community groups
  • Engage as an industry thought leader while staying abreast of innovations within sustainability and aviation, and educate Southwest leadership keeping them apprised of key developments
  • Serve as a subject matter expert, both internally and externally, on sustainability topics such as sustainable aviation fuel, new aircraft propulsion technologies, operational practices, waste reduction, carbon offset markets, and other topics
  • Evaluate and build external partnerships to advance our sustainability strategy, including consideration of potential financial investments in this space
  • Drive a coordinated effort with the appropriate internal Teams, e.g., Governmental Affairs and Fuel Supply Chain Management and external stakeholders, e.g., A4A, coalitions, to develop and drive Southwest’s environmental sustainability policy objectives
  • Monitor and partner on proposed environmental policy from federal, state, and local regulatory agencies
  • Monitor stakeholder sentiment, e.g., Customers, Employees, investors
  • Work with the Director, Environmental Sustainability to develop the near-term, mid-term, and long-term environmental sustainability plan
  • Must be able to meet any physical ability requirements listed on this description
  • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Experience partnering with community leaders and organizations to understand local issues and coordinate with their efforts
  • Ability to reconcile differing viewpoints (investors, Employees, Customers, and other stakeholders) and to make constructive policy recommendations
  • Demonstrated initiative and flexibility while managing through ambiguity
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and entrepreneurially within a large organization
  • Ability to express facts and opinions with candor and courage
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental sustainability laws and regulations

EDUCATION

  • Required: High School Diploma or GED
  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience in business or related field


EXPERIENCE

  • Required: 5-7 years of related work experience
  • Preferred: Experience in environmental sustainability
  • Preferred: Airline or transportation industry experience

  • Ability to perform work duties from [limited space work station/desk/office area] for extended periods of time
  • Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job
  • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job


OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines
  • Advanced Microsoft Office Suite experience (e.g., PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by start date to comply with Executive Order 14042, which requires employees of federal contractors to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
