Sr Manager, Research Science, Devices & Services

In alignment with this bold corporate goal, the Amazon Devices & Services (D&S) organization is looking for a highly skilled and experienced Senior Sustainability Science Manager to lead a team of world class sustainability scientists.

The leader in this role guides (and is hands-on involved in) the sustainability science and engineering used to perform the life cycle assessments (LCAs) that produce D&S’ carbon footprint, and in designing D&S’ net zero strategy. In this capacity this leader works closely with Engineering, Product, OPS and executive business leaders throughout the D&S organization to implement the net zero strategy, as well as with Amazon’s World Wide Sustainability organization and academic and industry partners on the creation of the global standards and best practices for measuring and managing Consumer Electronics businesses’ carbon footprint in ways that will best serve the Amazon’s D&S business and the planet for future decades.

Their team’s research informs Amazon’s most senior leaders on Think Big opportunities and critical sustainability issues facing the Amazon Devices & Services business in the short and long term so that they may place big bets. Their team’s models and experiments enable business unit leaders and topic-specific sustainability leaders to understand and plan for foundational work to innovate on energy, materials etc. for the benefit of Amazon customers, while enabling continued business growth (optimization and cost reduction).

Key job responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor and grow a team of Sustainability scientists 
  • Lead sustainability-related research projects through all stages: ideation, modeling, data collection, data analysis, data visualization, and reporting
  • Develop tools and methods to harvest and continuously update data to provide sustainability insights at scale
  • Respond to time critical questions from multiple engineering and business teams
  • Professionally communicate to senior business leaders
  • Work closely with software engineering teams to drive real-time model implementations and new feature creations.
  • Lead the early investigative / inception phase of strategic sustainability initiatives and effectively influence, negotiate, and communicate with stakeholders to enable hand off of those projects for implementation

  • PhD in scientific discipline (Computer Science, Economics, Engineering) or any other related quantitative discipline
  • 7+ years of academic or industry research experience conducting Sustainability research and/or driving sustainability improvements
  • Broad experience applying data-driven decision making across multiple industries
  • Strong publication record in scientific journals


  • Strong drive to question the status quo and learn new topics and skills
  • Experience working with big, messy datasets and deriving inferences from them
  • Strong competence in statistical analysis, databases and mathematical modeling
  • 4+ years of scripting or coding experience in Python, R, or any other similar scripting language

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,700/year in our lowest geographic market up to $324,100/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.

Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
