Sr. Director, Total Rewards

Remote (United States)

This position will provide comprehensive expert support on all aspects of compensation and total rewards, including hourly employees through executive compensation. The Total Rewards Leader will report to the Chief People Officer and collaborate closely with senior leadership, the different groups of within the HR team and various levels of leadership. In this role, you will be building the foundation for a strong and strategic Total Rewards culture and philosophy for the company and creating the right support team to execute and deliver on the key outcomes for our employees, senior leadership, our shareholders and our board of directors.


About the role-You will

  • Drive and lead the development of core Proterra Compensation processes as well as serve as an expert resource for HR business partners on executive as well as all levels of compensation matters.
  • Develop and coordinate the preparation of materials for meetings of the Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors while directly support the Chief People Officer in preparing for these meetings.
  • Partner with Legal, Finance and Communications on a team responsible for drafting the proxy statement for the annual shareholder meeting (with focus on the executive and director compensation sections, CEO pay ratio, pay versus performance and utilization of collaboration tools).
  • Directly develop and drive the development of competitive employment offers for key talent cross all jurisdictions including international hires.
  • Drive the strategy and process around market pricing and survey job matches for various job levels within the company.
  • Collaborate with the legal department on SEC reportable events to ensure that the executive compensation programs are legally compliant.
  • Direct approval process for executive level policy exception and retention requests.
  • Lead the annual compensation planning cycle activities (preparation of annual bonus and long-term incentive pool recommendations) and support presentations to the CEO and Board.
  • Coordinate with Human Resource Services (HRS) & Information Technology (IT) departments to ensure downstream transactions are timely executed.
  • Own certain ongoing processes, such as the design and maintenance of one-off programs, sales compensation and other incentive and recognition programs, processing certain transactions through payrolls, developing, and maintaining executive compensation information and resources.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of all levels of compensation training and education sessions.
  • Assess and recommend a Total Rewards organization development to support the growth and the ongoing needs of the business.
  • Partner with Finance on matters such as compensation-based accruals, funding requests and other ad-hoc requests.
  • Support the HR M&A function on executive-related aspects of deals, as needed.
  • Perform other compensation related duties and projects as required
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • You will report to the Chief People Officer and collaborate with other HRS and IT team members located at our headquarters in Burlingame, CA and manufacturing facilities in Los Angeles, CA and Greenville, SC.

Your Experience Includes

  • 10+ years’ experience in a compensation-focused roles.
  • Significant knowledge of executive compensation market trends and the requirements of external influencers and shareholders.
  • Advanced competency in using Excel, PowerPoint and other modern office functions and professional information technology systems.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field.
