Software Engineer

As a Java Software Engineer, you will be a hands-on lead engineer in our Product & Underwriting value stream supporting the document publishing efforts within Group Benefits. Your leadership will be essential to the success of our agile teams as we support our portfolio of publishing work. You will also seek to influence and advance our document publishing strategy by working with customers, architects and publishing platform owners. To be a software engineer on our team, you need to be willing to work solo and as a member of an agile Kanban team. That means we expect our software engineers to collaborate with our product owners, designers, and architects. You will write software, create database scripts, and help other engineers do the same. You will have a real impact on our business and technology. Our Group Benefits IT organization is looking for you, a detail-oriented, results-driven software engineer who is ready for a challenge! Joining members of a motivated team, working closely with our business partners in supporting their publishing related initiatives within an agile environment. You will be asked to make decisions quickly in consultation with team members while building strong relationships, actively participating in teamwork, and developing an understanding of the dynamics and critical nature of the business.

  • Participating with GB solution architects in defining our future state strategy for publishing.
  • Someone that is self-motivated, has leadership qualities, and wants to be a part shaping publishing strategy for GB.
  • Lead efforts to help improve stability and technical currency of GB owned publishing platform.
  • Someone that will strive to become the go-to person in Group Benefits for document publishing related inquiries.
  • Accountable for ensuring the team adheres to software engineering practices (e.g., Source code management, branching, code reviews, and issue resolution)
  • Perform hands-on development using Java and PL/SQL languages
  • Assist in agile feature and user story refinement to deliver business capabilities.
  • Identify and document technical enablers required to support business capabilities.
  • Lead system team initiatives designed to help improve DevOps processes
  • Design, test, develop, deploy, maintain, and improve software assets.
  • Contribute to and support system team backlog centering on release management, platform security, and technical concurrency.
  • Ensure high code quality which conforms to The Hartford coding standards and industry best practices.
  • Proactively identify, analyze, and address technical issues along with risks that could impact applications stability and/or project delivery.
  • Willingness and proven ability to learn and apply new technologies and methodologies.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline with a minimum of 5+ years of work experience in software engineering
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience programming in Java.
  • Hands-on development experience with Java, Java Spring Framework, and PL/SQL language required.
  • Experience using tools such as GitHub, Jenkins, UDeploy, and Nexus for code versioning, build, and migration.
  • Working experience with developing SOAP and REST APIs as well as having the ability to research and understand third party API provider integration requirements.
  • Experience with application architecture, software design and design patterns
  • Ability to work well in both a team environment and independently to design and deliver business solutions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with publishing software such as OpenText xPression, Oracle iStream, and Broadridge Communications Cloud is strongly desired.
  • Experience developing and supporting both vendor and custom publishing applications.
  • Group Benefits insurance industry experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with continuous integration and DevOps methodologies
  • Experience working with cross-functional project teams using Agile methodology with remotely located team members
  • Hands on experience product unit and assembly level as well as system wide test automation using frameworks such as Cucumber and Karate.


Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.


The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$111,920 - $167,880
