Social Media Manager

The UN Foundation seeks a versatile Social Media Manager who is energized by creating thumb-stopping, engaging, on-trend social media content about global issues. Reporting to the Senior Director, Integrated Communications, this role leads the day-to-day planning, curation, and management of UN Foundation’s social media channels. The Social Media Manager will help optimize our voice, tone, and engagement with our two million digital followers.


An expert in strategy, storytelling, and writing, the Social Media Manager will be committed to editorial excellence, and innovation. In addition, the successful candidate will bring multitasking dexterity, passion for data, and obsession with social media trends to the role.


This position is located in Washington, D.C. (Hybrid schedule)


Essential Functions

  • Copywrite and copyedit social media content for a range of channels, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter
  • Create, manage and execute social media content plans and campaigns—organic and paid—on a daily basis and for specific campaigns
  • Plan and implement UN Foundation’s social media calendar
  • Find creative solutions for managing multiple requests for amplification – adapting content to align with brand voice and standards, as necessary
  • Collaborate with members of the Public Affairs team and other internal stakeholders to bring social media campaigns and content to life
  • Optimize content for social and SEO
  • Define relevant KPIs, track, and analyze performance across channels, suggesting and making real-time improvements
  • Provide social media support for events, including overseas, leading production of content across channels
  • Make actionable recommendations and insights to shape social media strategy
  • Stay up to date with latest social media and digital best practices and digital marketing trends, capturing and sharing learning
  • Other duties as assigned


Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree required; focus on communications, marketing, or related field preferred
  • 5-7 years’ experience in digital communications, with increasing seniority
  • Experience managing social media for a global non-profit or in international affairs
  • Exceptional storytelling and writing skills for social media
  • Strong, mature judgment and critical thinking skills
  • In-depth experience working with social media management and marketing tools
  • Ability to express complex ideas creatively and succinctly
  • Proficiency in design for social, and high levels of creativity
  • Superior attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Hootsuite, native platform content and ad managers, Google Analytics, and listening / monitoring tools like Brandwatch and Talkwalker
  • Experience in tracking and analyzing data and preparing meaningful analytics reports for senior staff
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with easy ability to relate to, and inspire confidence in, people at all levels, including senior UNF/UN officials as needed
  • Excellent time and project management skills
  • Proactive initiative-taker and ideas-generator
  • Helpful team-player with positive attitude and professional demeanor
  • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities
  • Up to 10% domestic/international travel required
  • Writing assessment required during the recruitment process
