Social Media Manager

New Haven, CT

Yale University’s Office of Public Affairs & Communications (OPAC) seeks an experienced and enterprising social media manager to join its editorial team. The social media manager will be crucial in vividly bringing Yale’s people, mission, culture, and accomplishments to life through creative, timely, and tasteful social media posts. The manager will assist in developing and implementing effective strategies, analyzing digital performance metrics, managing online communities, and will generally advance the office’s expanding commitment to multimedia presentation.


The social media manager will work closely with writers, editors, photographer-videographers, and colleagues in media relations and other OPAC specialty units. Reporting to the chief communications officer for social media, the social media manager will also collaborate with communications colleagues university-wide, many of whom produce and manage social media content. The ideal candidate for this role is a champion of visual storytelling who can support OPAC’s mission of informing and inspiring local and global audiences while stewarding Yale’s reputation and voice.


This role offers a hybrid schedule. Occasional after-hours and weekend work may be necessary.


Essential Duties

  1. Create, curate, publish, and manage content on Yale University’s primary social media accounts, ensuring posts reflect the university's priorities. 
  2. Identify and produce original, social-first content for Yale’s current channels and identify opportunities to adjust our channel mix in the future. 
  3. Maintain a social media editorial calendar in coordination with OPAC’s other editorial calendars. 
  4. Monitor social media and other communications to identify and promptly address potential issues or concerns. 
  5. Continuously audit emerging trends, platform updates, and social media best practices to enhance strategy and performance.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree and three years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Proficiency in creating, curating, and scheduling engaging and relevant content for social media channels such as X (formerly known as Twitter), TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Threads.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Strong writing and visual storytelling skills and demonstrated experience producing photography, videography, and/or basic graphic design for social media platforms. (*Must provide link to portfolio)


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to maintain and optimize a social media content calendar, ensuring timely delivery of a steady stream of compelling content across all channels.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Skilled in tracking social media metrics and insights to assess campaign performance, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions to elevate social media presence.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Knowledge of social media management and intelligence tools, such as Sprout Social, and experience in online community management and monitoring to identify and promptly address potential issues or crises.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Bachelor’s Degree and three years of relevant professional experience in social media management, journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field, with specialized skill in developing dynamic content for social media platforms. Proficiency in use of TikTok. Familiarity with basic graphic design software. Experience with video production.
