Senior Manager, State Government Relations

MAJOR PURPOSE
Responsible for advocating on behalf of MLB and its Clubs on a variety of issues before state legislative, executive, and rulemaking bodies.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, communicate, and explain MLB’s position on legislation, regulations, and other proposals to state lawmakers, regulators, and other government officials
- Monitor legislative and regulatory activity, and identify proposals of strategic, financial, and operational importance to MLB
- Coordinate with Club government affairs personnel regarding overlapping policy issues
- Maintain strategic relationships with state and local elected officials, staff, and agencies in various jurisdictions
- Travel to state capitols and conferences to meet with government officials
- Testify in state legislative and regulatory hearings in support of MLB and its Clubs
- Draft written testimony, advocacy pieces, talking points, briefings, and PowerPoint presentations for various audiences
- Develop subject matter expertise on a range of policy issues that affect professional sports
- Oversee MLB’s use of contract lobbyists and membership in trade organizations, where applicable
- Support MLB’s federal lobbying efforts as needed
- Perform related duties as required
REQUIREMENTS
- B.A. and a minimum of 3 years of State-level government relations and/or regulatory experience required
- Strong oral and written communication (including editing) skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build strong relationships with internal and external partners
- Professional demeanor, organized, and detail-oriented
- Ability to manage deliverables with time-sensitive deadlines
- This position will be based in New York City but require significant travel
- Experience drafting submissions to governmental bodies is required
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office required, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; advanced knowledge preferred
