Senior Manager, Online Community Relations

The programs and activities of the AACR foster the exchange of new knowledge among scientists and physicians in cancer research as well as in related sciences. The AACR publishes ten peer-reviewed scientific journals and an award-winning magazine for cancer patients and their loved ones; convenes topical scientific conferences and an annual meeting that draws more than 22,500 participants; offers educational workshops that train early-career investigators in a variety of scientific and clinical areas; funds research fellowships, cancer development awards, and research grants for both senior and junior investigators; raises public awareness of the progress in the biology, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer; engages actively in advocacy for increased federal research funding and other national policies that accelerate progress against cancer; and interacts with regulatory agencies to support regulatory science and policy.

 

AACR Foundation:

 

The AACR Foundation was established in 2000. The purpose of the Foundation is to raise funds for cancer research, for AACR’s programs and services, and for the overall promotion of the organization’s mission. The AACR Foundation has the creativity, innovation, and flexibility to support AACR in making significant advances in the prevention and conquest of cancer. With the help of contributors from among the AACR membership, colleagues, and friends in the national and international cancer community, and corporations and foundations, the AACR Foundation is poised to help the AACR achieve important victories in the fight against cancer.

 

The AACR Foundation was preceded by a Development Division at AACR formed in 1997. During the past sixteen years, the Division grew from a fundraising operation that raised $1.5 million in 1998, to a staff of seventeen people raising more than $28 million today. The Foundation is positioned for growth, particularly among individual constituencies, and has a goal of doubling its attainment with the next decade.

 

Among the AACR Foundation’s current programs are corporate contributions, industry alliances, foundation grants, individual annual giving campaigns, community endurance events, and web-based engagement.

 

The AACR’s Players vs. Cancer (PvC) program was founded in 2019 to support the cultivation and growth of a community in the online gaming and streaming spaces to support the AACR’s mission. Since its founding, PvC has grown into a vibrant and generous community of supporters, donors, and fundraisers dedicated to coming together to raise critical awareness and funds to support cancer cures.

 

Position Summary:

 

The fundraising arm of the AACR, the AACR Foundation, seeks an accomplished, energetic, and results-oriented professional focused on the technology supporting online giving and the cultivation and growth of a vibrant and generous community of online donors and fundraisers to support AACR’s mission. Under the banner of the Players vs. Cancer (PvC) program, this person will cultivate and develop relationships among streaming community content creators and potential donors that result in an increase in unrestricted giving to the AACR’s mission and programs, while creatively and meaningfully engaging gaming community members to become long-term supporters of and advocates for the AACR. This will require strategic knowledge of social media advertising methods, online community building platforms, and the technical knowledge to continually upgrade and enhance these platforms to leverage maximum supporter engagement.

 

The Senior Manager of Online Community Relations will apply their knowledge and experience in gaming and business development to identify new opportunities for corporate support and should feel comfortable with cold outreach and executing email/direct messaging campaigns.

 

This position will regularly interface with colleagues across the AACR and AACR Foundation to leverage synergies to develop communications and collateral aimed at engaging the streaming community and the unique interests of the AACR’s partners. This Social Responsibility, business development, and customer relationship management technology. The position currently has no direct reports.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

 

·      Engage in outreach to the online streaming community at large through streaming, video, and written content, as well as personal outreach, in order to build an ever-increasing community of donors, fundraisers, and advocates for the AACR’s mission.

·      Identify and target streaming content creators to develop them into donors, fundraisers, and ambassadors for PvC and the AACR.

·      Plan and execute gaming community fundraising events to focus and maximize donations.

·      Reach out to prospects through email, direct messaging, Twitch, Discord, LinkedIn, Instagram, Tik Tok, and other communication vehicles.

·      Solicit and secure corporate support and in-kind donations for events, primarily focused on the Players vs. Cancer program, and occasionally the AACR’s other community-based program, AACR Runners for Research.

·      Conduct meetings, prepare materials and proposals, make the solicitation, and complete the necessary follow-up to advance the conversation and secure support.

·      Lead CRM management to organize cold prospects, sales leads, and partners.

·      Effectively manages a high volume of unique support outreach, requests, and proposals.

·      Performs the essential functions of the position, and other tasks as may be assigned and required.

 

Education Requirements:

 

·      Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience

 

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

 

·      At least 3-5 years of experience in online community fundraising and/or business development.

·      Proven ability to increase engagement on diverse social media platforms, including Twitch, Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok, and Discord.

·      Mastery at handling a large volume of projects efficiently and quickly in a deadline driven environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

·      Experience in building strong external and internal relationships.

·      Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

·      Demonstrated ability to make complex decisions, problem solve, practice hands-on management, and work with volunteers.

·      Passion for AACR’s mission to prevent and cure cancer.
