In partnership with the Vice President for Viral Vaccines & Immunology (VVI), the role will set strategy for viral vaccine programs and lead a preclinical immunology team supporting all vaccine programs.
Requirements for this role include expertise in respiratory viruses (including respiratory syncytial virus), immunology, vaccinology, working knowledge of RNA-based vaccines and established industry experience in vaccine research and development. Must have experience in viral vaccine research and development.
The incumbent will provide leadership, scientific and strategic innovation, and technical support for a diverse research staff.
The role also requires experience and an established track record in working with multifunctional teams outside of a reporting structure, presenting research and program strategy to leadership, representing Pfizer VVI at national and international conferences, and proficiency in scientific writing.
Role Responsibilities
- The incumbent will provide strategic leadership for one or more viral vaccine programs
- Leads a motivated, committed and engaged project team. Models and expects effective team behavior to achieve the project goals
- Leads direct reports and non-reports, reviewing experimental designs and data
- Ensures that intellectual property is appropriately obtained and safeguarded
- Represents Research on the cross-functional Vaccine Program Team as Research Lead, operating at the interface between research and development, coordinating with non-research functions in advancing the vaccine through developmental stage gates
- Takes a key role in communication about vaccine programs in internal Pfizer documents and external patent applications, regulatory submissions, scientific papers, and other communications
- Serves as a primary scientific liaison with external alliance partners, including collaborating companies, government agencies and non-governmental organizations
- Participates in the management of the Viral Vaccines & Immunology group, including the supervision of junior colleagues, the group budget, laboratories, and compliance
Qualifications
- PhD in virology, immunology or a related field
- >10 years industry experience in pre-clinical research and in vaccine technical development with working knowledge of both scientific and non-scientific aspects
- Strong knowledge of virology, humoral and cellular immunology, vaccinology and 10+years of experience in the field
- Able to effectively direct a laboratory-based, industrial vaccine discovery and development program
- Proven track record of project advancement and delivery
- Practical experience with RNA vaccine technologies
- Understanding of the business aspects of vaccines, and viral vaccine scientific, clinical and competitive landscape
- Demonstrated innovation and the ability to apply knowledge, techniques and skills to identify and validate best new technologies
- Experience of providing scientific leadership for projects in the pharmaceutical industry

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $191,300.00 to $318,800.00.
In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 22.5% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
