Where the chemistry happens…

Responsible for the development, evaluation, testing and quality of new products requested by the regional and/or global automotive refinish marketing team.  Products could include undercoats, clearcoats, topcoats and hardeners as assigned by the global team. Provides technical support to production on automotive refinish products manufactured in N. America, and other global manufacturing sites including assisting the team with work on Product Maintenance issues (internal and external). 


This position has a direct impact on the quality and perception of BASF technology, its performance and technical service expertise at customers. You will have one direct report and be based daily in our facility in Whitehouse, OH outside of Toledo.


What you'll do....

  • Developing products for that meet global or other region requirements. Designing experimental plan with supervisor approval. Independently executing experimental plan and run experiments on lab samples to validate performance of coating formulations to meet established product profiles
  • Interacting regularly with the production staff at the various locations in North America manufacturing products as well as EMEA sites to solve manufacturing problems
  • Participating in global meetings with peers from technical, marketing and supply chain to present work done in North America, including the preparation and presentation of technical reports outlining activities, and learnings.
  • Performing a variety of scientific tasks without direct supervision. Priorities are set with consultation of supervisor
  • Reviewing product requirements and incorporate into quality system (SAP-QM)
  • Participating actively in vendor meetings as necessary. Remaining current with the relevant state-of-the-art coatings, testing, process and equipment technologies. Managing intellectual property as it relates to NLR strategic concerns
  • Modifing existing global CR products to meet N. American regional requirements


If you...

  • Hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a physical science discipline, Polymer Chemistry preferred. Master's or PhD in Polymer Chemistry strongly preferred.
  • Have a minimum of 5+ years relevant experience in product development of automotive coatings. Automotive refinish related coatings strongly preferred.
  • Being experienced with scale-up in production is an asset.
  • Posses good laboratory skills and the ability to carry out laboratory work in a controlled environment, including proper use of a laboratory notebook to record data and observations accurately.  
  • Have knowledge of safe laboratory practices, including good project management skills to execute a project in a time/cost efficient manner.
