Scientist I
Who We Are
23andMe, the leading consumer genetics and research company, has accumulated a wealth of genotypic and phenotypic information from participants committed to improving human health through advances in genomics. Our Therapeutics team in South San Francisco leverages this data to discover and develop new treatments that can offer significant benefits for patients with serious, unmet medical needs.
This dedicated research and drug development group identifies novel targets using 23andMe's genetic database and performs preclinical research to advance programs towards clinical development. We currently have programs across several therapeutic areas, including but not limited to oncology, respiratory, and cardiovascular diseases.
We are seeking an exceptional, highly motivated, detail oriented, and collaborative Scientist to help grow our newly formed Complex Model Generation unit. The successful candidate will be working as part of a highly skilled team generating genetically modified complex models for collaborative research, utilizing genome-editing technology in combination with classic genetics approaches in stem cells. The candidate will also work with the team to propel innovative technologies forward by researching and investigating new methods for complex model generation.
What You’ll Do
- Collaborate with biology groups (immunology, cardiometabolic and oncology) to develop strategies and identify opportunities to apply complex, disease-relevant in vitro and/or in vivo models to support our drug discovery efforts.
- Build capability with human iPSC- and murine ES cell- technology platforms. This may include developing robust processes for purification, expansion, differentiation, and editing into different lineages, 3D cultures, or organoids.
- Build capabilities to interrogate gene function at scale and incorporate functional data to enrich our unparalleled genetic insights
- Build capability for gene delivery with viral (lentiviral and AAV vectors) and non-viral (ssDNA, dsDNA, and mRNA) based gene delivery systems.
- Optimize and perform arrayed perturbation screens in mouse/human primary cell cultures
- Present results internally to therapeutics, executive leadership teams and externally at scientific conferences.
- Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.
What You’ll Bring
- Ph.D. in developmental/stem cell biology, molecular biology or related field with a track record of high-quality publications and/or patent applications or Master’s degree with substantial research experience.
- Experience with human iPSC culture, differentiation, reprogramming, and characterization platforms.
- Experience with cell engineering strategies to optimize and scale genetically modified primary cell cultures.
- Experience with functional assays of differentiated primary cells, such as immune cells.
- Ability to execute and document laboratory procedures and experiments with great attention to detail.
- Comfortable in a fast-paced environment and dynamic work ethic based upon changing priorities
- Strong background in molecular biology techniques (cloning and PCR/qRT-PCR; proficiency in DNA analysis software tools, e.g., analysis of NGS)
- Strong organizational skills, communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, team environment
Strongly Preferred
- Experience with flow cytometry and cell sorting
- Experience with genome editing in cells or in vivo is highly desirable.
- Experience with murine ES cell culture, germ line transmission, differentiation, reprogramming, and characterization platforms.
