Safety Specialist

Colby, KS

CHS has an exciting opportunity at our Country Operations location in Sharon Springs, KS. We are looking for a Safety Specialist to provide technical support assistance on matters relating to safety and will be responsible for assisting with the monitoring of company safety programs, policies, and compliance with federal, state and local safety codes and regulations. You must be detail oriented with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.


Responsibilities

  • Assist Management on facility improvement projects by researching requirements, suggesting options, obtaining proposals, and evaluating safety and compliance issues on final project.
  • Communicate with management, safety staff and employees to keep all locations up to date and current regarding changes in safety regulations and programs.
  • Conduct periodic location inspections regarding housekeeping, equipment and machinery condition, environmental concerns, DOT records and all other safety related issues at locations, to ensure compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and CHS regulations.
  • Conduct safety & compliance training to educate employees on job safety, health hazards, and methods of reducing and/or eliminating workplace hazards.
  • Coordinate new employee orientation and cover existing employees’ on-going CORE training.
  • Facilitate monthly safety meetings utilizing the Minutes and Agenda system. Keep committee members on track and focused on the issues assigned and document progress and communications in the risk management system.
  • Facilitate relationships with local regulatory personal and agencies, provide compliance information, and respond to any concerns they may have.
  • Lead efforts to continually improve processes and implement procedures that improve safety, environment, compliance and inventory management.
  • Lead efforts to correct any environment, safety and health problems identified by auditors, insurance representation or internal reviews.
  • Maintain and periodically review of the risk management system to produce safety records and documentation required by the company, state and federal regulations.
  • Oversee function specific training needed for various tasks in the operation.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Refer issues regarding Capital expenditures, Employee Discipline, Operational Changes, etc. to management.
  • Conduct safety audit and loss control inspections.
  • Identify and communicate workplace hazards.
  • Participate in monthly safety leader update meeting, annual safety leader conference, and other department communication activities.
  • Write, review, track and report incident investigations and reports and learn to make corrective action recommendations.


Minimum Qualifications (required)

  • 1+ years in Environmental, Health and/or Safety


Additional Qualifications

  • Agriculture background, facility operation, and management experience 
  • Bachelor's degree preferred in Occupational Health, Environmental Health and Safety, or in a related field.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to climb ladders and operate equipment is needed to inspect facilities
  • Ability to work in dusty and adverse and changeable weather conditions
