Reporter

We’re looking for a general assignment radio journalist who is passionate about local reporting, has institutional knowledge of the nine-county Bay Area and centers the voices of people affected by regional news. This person should be able to satisfy daily deadlines and respond quickly to breaking developments in filing several newscast items a day. Our GA reporters collaborate with other parts of KQED’s newsroom and file short and long radio items as well as digital pieces.

This job is between 24 and 32 hours per week for six months.

The successful candidate will be required to join The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). 

This role will work hybrid between working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working remotely. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Essential Functions: 

1. Researches, writes and reports stories from the studio and in the field for radio broadcast and other digital distribution technologies.
2. Produces and delivers variety of editorial content- audio, scripts, text stories, blog posts, photographs, video, databases and other content- for radio broadcast, web, mobile and social media platforms.
3. Monitors news developments in the Bay Area and works with the Newscast editors on daily coverage.

Other Job Functions: 

1. Covers local communities, local governments and the region’s private sector
2. Pitches Bay Area stories that focus on the region’s affordability crisis, criminal justice and racial injustice. 
3. Performs other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge / Experience Required:

1. Two years minimum experience as broadcast, print and/or online journalist, including news reporting, editing and production.  Three years of journalist experience a plus.
2. Excellent skills in news writing.
3. Knowledge of the major issues in the Bay Area and/or the capacity to gain them. 
4. Thorough knowledge of journalistic principles, ethics and standards. 
5. Knowledge of sound editing and radio production techniques. 
6. High proficiency of on-air voicing skills. 
7. Ability to interview and communicate with a variety of individuals. 
8. Ability to work under deadline pressures. 
9. Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
