Project Manager

Fremont, CA

Tesla’s Bay Area Prototype Team is currently seeking a project manager to scale the operational functions of the group.


The Prototype Machine Shop Team provides engineers and technicians across the organization with fabricated and CNC machined components as well as insight into adjacent manufacturing processes. Through the Prototype Shop’s efforts, we help enhance component and systems design anywhere from concept through production by bringing conceptual ideas to the physical world. Engineering projects we contribute towards range widely from pre-production vehicles, energy systems, artificial intelligence, and other future-facing projects.


As a project manager on the Prototype Manufacturing team, you will function as our air traffic controller. Working diligently to ensure our machines and other resources are being used efficiently. Managing workflow, inventory, and group reporting efforts to maximize our impact on the company’s performance.


Responsibilities

  • Assist department leads with managing inbound projects from internal engineering teams.
  • Material, tool and shop supplies procurement, inventory and cataloguing. 
  • Manage team communications & logistics. 
  • Track project milestones including task duration and resource usage.
  • Negotiate with vendors and set up vendor accounts as required. 
  • Generate and track purchase orders for tools, parts and other team needs.
  • Create, manage, and update project scope, task lists and timelines. 
  • Create reports showing critical path activities and schedules.
  • Ensure proper closeout of the entire project/program.
  • Provide feedback to technical project/program manager and cross-functional team members on issues, yield impact.
  • Perform project walks with system owners.
  • Assist with writing technical documents. 
  • Identify opportunities and execute on 5S projects and other continuous improvements. 


Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or other relevant technical discipline preferred.
  • Relevant experience in manufacturing or project management systems and methodologies.
  • Experience developing processes and methodologies in industrial environments. 
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with all levels of project staff and organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced office environment, able to multi-task, meet critical deadlines with an eye for accuracy and attention to details.
  • Willing and able to be hands-on with projects and tools throughout the shops if necessary.
  • Flexible with ability to work overtime on short notice based on strategic needs of the company. 
  • Familiarity with metal fabrication and machining processes greatly preferred.
