Privacy Manager

Remote (California, United States) San Francisco, CA

Privacy is fundamental to the Discord experience, and we’re looking for our first Privacy Manager to help shape and scale that experience for years to come. Reporting to our Director of Product & Privacy law, you’ll join a team that is passionate about privacy and data protection and growing our business in a way that makes us proud. From designing and building new infrastructure, to working with teams to make existing systems better, to building new privacy-related product features, you’ll work with a cross functional team composed of legal counsel, engineers, product managers, data scientists, customer service agents, and more to make sure Discord is on the cutting edge of privacy compliance. This is a high impact role at a fast-growing company committed to user privacy.


What you'll be doing

  • Design, implement, and support key privacy program initiatives that deliver a world-class privacy experience for Discord and our users
  • Be an expert on Discord’s data processing activities, systems, and operational practices so that you can propose effective changes and scale systems as the company grows
  • Manage development, implementation, and maintenance of complex privacy programs and processes involving cross-functional teams
  • Help maintain our public-facing statements about privacy and respond to privacy-related inquiries from users, partners, and other stakeholders
  • Help deliver best-in-class privacy and data protection training initiatives across the company
  • Effectively communicate and interface with internal stakeholders about privacy priorities and opportunities
  • Perform privacy vulnerability assessments and provide concrete feedback to mitigate challenges
  • Help ensure compliance with Discord policies, laws and regulations relating to privacy
  • Monitor updates and changes in global privacy laws


What you should have

  • 4+ years of work experience on privacy or technology law, policy, programs, or other related fields
  • Working knowledge of privacy and data protection regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, and LGPD, as well as firm understanding of industry best practices related to privacy and security
  • Curiosity and ability to jump into less familiar areas and learn while doing
  • Demonstrated successful team and project management with medium-to-large scale projects, across non-technical and technical teams
  • Ability to manage several simultaneous projects under deadline pressure
  • Experience with scaling processes and procedures for a fast-growing company
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects, prioritizing, and consistently achieving results
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging


Bonus Points

  • Industry certifications relating to security, privacy, and risk management, such as CIPP
  • Experience at consumer-facing technology platforms
  • An example of your superb filing skills, such as a highly organized sock drawer
  • Ability to use GIFs in a hieroglyphic manner
