Are you passionate about research, technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and the law? The Microsoft Corporate, External and Legal Affairs (CELA) team has an immediate opening for a dynamic, highly motivated attorney to join our Microsoft Research (MSR) legal team in Redmond, Washington in a Principal Corporate Counsel role.

 

The MSR legal team provides front-line world-wide legal support for

Microsoft Research  – Microsoft’s premier research division that employs scientists, researchers and engineers from around the world to advance the state of the art in AI and related technologies and find innovative solutions to some of the world’s most challenging problems.

Responsibilities

  • Act as primary legal contact (generalist and subject matter expert in various areas) to MSR clients in the US and overseas, enabling their successful execution on a dynamic set of fast-paced global initiatives.
  • Counsel clients on new laws, regulations, norms, and standards necessary to advance and accelerate Microsoft’s role as a leader in AI research and development.
  • Coordinating with CELA colleagues across the larger worldwide organization on various IP, standards, ethics, privacy, data security, litigation, antitrust, regulatory compliance, and government affairs issues.
  • Manage relationships and collaborate with outside counsel or other service providers to develop strategies and innovative solutions for MSR’s research and business needs.
  • Serve as a key business partner and valued legal advisor to senior level clients and colleagues by providing proactive and solution-oriented advice to help drive resolution and clarity on legal and policy matters.
  • Monitor research and business activities to ensure legal compliance policies/standards are followed to mitigate associated risks and advise and help clients understand complex compliance issues.
  • Negotiate, review, and draft legal agreements for MSR client groups, including collaboration agreements, university engagement contracts, and data sharing/acquisition partnerships.
  • Identify and engage appropriate stakeholders in CELA as well as research, compliance, business, and operations teams to escalate issues and drive decisions; provide guidance to attorneys and paralegals on escalations.
  • Advise clients and provide training on various legal matters including IP, AI policy/legal, and privacy-related issues.
  • Some domestic and international travel may be required.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate Degree or Equivalent International Degree
  • OR Completion of a Legal Apprenticeship.
  • Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction.
  • 5+ years experience as a practicing attorney law firm or a large enterprise environment counseling clients on technology related matters
  • OR equivalent practice of law.


Legal Counsel IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $124,800 - $222,000 per year.


There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $159,000 - $238,600 per year.
