Photojournalist/Photo Editor


The Austin American-Statesman/statesman.compart of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a talented photojournalist/photo editor to join our award-winning staff.

 

Qualities and/or Responsibilities:

  • Talented, well-rounded dedicated photojournalist able to shoot spot news, sports and tell stories with photographs.
  • Committed to community photojournalism showing the lives of Central Texas residents.
  • Experienced with and be able to work with autonomy.
  • Desire to move into a management role is a must.
  • Work with photographers, reporters, and editors to determine the best visual approach for stories being written.
  • Solid problem-solving skills and a calm approach to the daily workload is essential.
  • Ability to look ahead for planning and scheduling for the visuals team.
  • Passion for visual storytelling from a producing and editing position.
  • Manages photography projects.
  • Procures photos and images as needed from staff, freelance and the Gannett network.
  • Reviews project planning documents and anticipates photo needs.
  • Ensures adherence to style guide, captioning and acceptable content.
  • Collaborates with photographers, reporters, and editors to ensure alignment.
  • Handles photography paperwork when needed.
  • Ability to learn different content management systems.
  • Positive attitude working with newsroom staff.
  • Compassionate coaching style.
  • Thrives working on a talented creative team.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master’s in video, photography, communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience as a photographer.
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Deep understanding of photography styles and techniques.
  • Demonstrated excellence as a visual storyteller.
  • Demonstrated expertise in photojournalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate and execute creative ideas and collaborate with others.
  • Experience maintaining high journalistic standards and uncompromising ethics.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong motivation, a collaborative work ethic and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work and adapt in a rapidly changing environment.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check and a motor vehicle record check & drug screen (for driving roles only).
