Payroll & Benefits Specialist

Cambridge, MA

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is the surest path to limitless, clean fusion energy. Our mission is to enable world-wide clean energy for everyone, creating a sustainable environment for current and future generations. We have created a credible path to an operating fusion power plant in 15 years which leverages our novel collaboration with MIT and funding from strategic and financial investors who share our vision. This begins by developing a new class of high-field superconducting magnets that will enable the SPARC tokamak to demonstrate net energy from fusion for the first time. To execute this plan, we are now looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skillsets and experience that relate to this role.


We are looking for an expert in ADP Workforce Now payroll processing. In this position, you will be responsible for processing all aspects of multi-state payrolls as well as managing benefit deductions, worker’s compensation coding, and 401k benefits. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of federal and state payroll tax laws, be detail oriented, and must maintain the highest level of confidentiality.


This team member will:

  • Work collaboratively with HR and Finance
  • Process semi-monthly and bi-weekly payroll for the Company via ADP Workforce Now
  • Process and manage all payroll and HRIS activities in ADP such as new hire entry, e-verify, terminations, pay adjustments, bonus payments, information updates, etc.
  • Process year end items such as W2s, ACA Forms, etc. via ADP
  • Process coding for Workers Compensation and annual audits
  • Process 401(k) funding via ADP and Fidelity immediately following payroll processing, as well as regular auditing
  • Review and reconcile reports from all company benefit providers that impact deductions in ADP
  • Audit weekly timecards for a subset of the employee population to ensure time is submitted
  • Implement, maintain, and review payroll processing systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, new hires, terminations, changes in pay and other deductions.
  • Maintain registrations and compliance with local and state payroll and unemployment taxation offices


The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business administration, finance, or human resources preferred
  • Experience with ADP Workforce Now
  • 5 years’ experience processing payroll on at least a biweekly basis for over 100 employees
  • Excel proficiency 
  • Solid understanding of federal and state wage and tax laws
  • Audit experience
  • Reporting skills
  • Extreme attention to detail
  • Excellent record keeping
  • Self-motivated and excellent time management
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Overall sense of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality 


Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Experience working with Fidelity’s portal (preferred)
  • MA & CA State Payroll Laws (preferred)
  • Ability to type and/or sit for extended periods of time
  • While travel would be rare, you must be willing to do so. If you are located out of state, you may be required to travel a few times per year.
