Manager, Team Operations

We’re looking for a strong people leader to join Team Operations focusing on leadership support and team operations. We need someone who identifies and supports the needs of individuals and teams alike, ensuring their reports feel highly equipped and empowered as producers and amplifiers of impact in our orgs, every single day. To be successful in this role you will need to be a great communicator, an ideator, and an experienced mobilizer who cares deeply about helping people, especially in a global, Digital by Design (DxD) world.

Operations at Shopify (including Product Ops, Team Ops, Business Ops, and Program Management) work to enable the development of our product vision while driving execution capability, impact, and overall team culture and connectedness. As a part of the Operations Discipline, Team Operations keeps people focused, informed/aligned, coordinated and moving as fast as possible so Shopify can combine the impact of giants with the speed of a startup.

As a leader of Team Operations you will manage a team of Coordinators, Expansion Packs and/or Team Operations Specialists who provide leadership support and team operations across the business. These key roles drive and optimize productivity of Product and Craft/Discipline Area Leaders, deliver on DxD and IRL events, and manage product area and org specific team/culture operations maintaining connections to the greater Shopify. 

Your Priorities at a High Level

  • People Management - leading a team of high performing crafters from the Team Operations and Admin Support sub-disciplines, with varying tenures and experience in the discipline, enabling development, empowering your team members to grow, and holding a high performance bar always. 
  • Ritual Management - developing and leading the aim (strategy), being a primary assembler and building the required teams of assemblers to plan and execute Group level rituals and engagement, and connecting this to the global Shopify calendar/ moments, and advising as a discipline expert
  • 10K’ Group Team Ops Management - be an extended member and business partner to the Groups’ SLT, managing the tracking and reporting of resources, rituals and team health across the Group and the product areas/pillar(s) within your ecosystem, leading strategy/aiming and identifying operational opportunities to quickly address gaps and inefficiencies + build for the long term. 

What will you do?

  • Contribute to creating the best environment and exceptional team health to build and ship product & keep our teams engaged & connected
  • Lead a team of Team Operations Specialists, Coordinators and/or Expansion Packs either directly or indirectly, acting as a player coach and influencing across roles/groups
  • Identify opportunities to ensure that your Leadership and Team Support team is equipped with the most current tools, [human and other] resources and information at all times, to help them achieve impact in their roles x-Areas/groups
  • Design and lead Group specific Culture Strategies that are founded on broader scale Strategies [Comms, Culture, etc], working closely with the Senior Lead, Team Operations to ensure alignment and consistency in the AIM and working closely with your team to ASSEMBLE and ACHIEVE the outputs within the Strategy
  • Work closely with discipline and Product Area Coordinators, Expansion Packs and Team Operations Specialists to understand the needs of senior leaders and their respective teams to help identify opportunities to contribute to increased operational productivity, culture and team building within and across teams
  • Identify best practices and opportunities to systematize and automate Coordinator, Expansion Pack and Team Operations Specialist functions to unlock resources and bandwidth to be leveraged in higher impact projects and responsibilities 
  • Work with the Leadership & Team Support team to identify creative ways to foster team connections in a Digital by Default environment, within orgs and across Shopify
  • Build connections with counterparts across Shopify to ensure alignment, sharing of best practices and lessons learned to maximize the impact of the Leadership & Team Support as a craft
  • Continue to build a healthy culture among the Leadership & Team Support team so everyone can do their best work:
  • Identify root problems and work with leadership, Talent, Expansion Packs, Team Operations Specialists and Coordinators to execute prioritized actions
  • Identify opportunities to optimize the roles and responsibilities of Coordinators, Expansion Packs and Team Operations Specialists and across Shopify

What do you bring to the table?

  • 3+ years of professional experience as a people lead/supervisor
  • Experience coaching team members and/or direct reports promoting skills development and career growth
  • Exceptional communication and writing skills to articulate ideas, information and knowledge in meaningful and impactful ways
  • Stellar organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to ideate and think outside the box even when targets and details are sometimes ambiguous
  • Exceptional at building relationships and gaining and keeping trust with people across cultures, time zones, levels and disciplines
  • Good at prioritizing tasks, in line with bigger team and org priorities
  • Ability to multitask, manage ambiguity and adapt quickly to new situations
  • Quick to understand different technology tools and platforms in a DxD work environment
  • Comfort in demonstrating initiative and being a proactive problem-solver
