Manager, Sustainability and Social Impact

The Sustainability and Social Impact Manager will design, implement, and promote initiatives to drive sustainable values and social impact initiatives across the firm. This is a new position where the individual will develop and maintain the reputation of NRF as a socially and environmentally responsible organization. The Manager will liaise with departments across the firm and engage with the wider community to promote sustainability initiatives and play an instrumental role in formalizing the firm's responsible business practices.


This role works under minimal supervision, relying on experience and judgement to ensure the appropriate activities have been carried out for responsible business practices. The successful candidate will exhibit excellent problem solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills, and lead through influence.


This position is ideally located in Houston, TX, but can be based in any of our US offices. We offer a hybrid schedule which is primarily remote on a regular basis. All personnel, absent those with an approved accommodation, are expected to be in the office under certain circumstances, including but not limited to client business needs; firm business travel; participating in firm, group, or team meetings/events; at the request of their supervisor; when needed to serve a client or accomplish a task for the firm that requires in-office attendance, etc.


The Manager reports to the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Sustainability and is an exempt position.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Play a key role in developing, drafting, implementing and updating social impact, community support and sustainability policies and procedures to develop a cohesive firm-wide strategy and approach to responsible business and social impact.
  • Work with the Business Development and Marketing and Communications teams to build external recognition of the firm’s sustainability and social impact activities and award nominations across NRF digital assets, in the legal press and in client pitches
  • Assist with managing and administering the sustainability and social impact budget.
  • Liaise with government, community groups, corporate responsibility organizations/networks and other firms to develop and identify best practices and policies in sustainability and social impact work
  • Represent the firm on appropriate government, community and corporate responsibility networks and committees
  • Liaise with managers and teams across the firm to publicize appropriate activities and success stories within the firm.
  • Complete various admin tasks as they relate to the intranet and working on community and sustainability pages


Sustainability

  • Manage the collection of environmental impact data across the US offices and work closely with each Office Administrator to develop a system of reporting data in a uniform manner
  • Report data to our carbon footprint vendor and assist with the development of an action plan to reduce the firm’s environmental impact
  • Develop a dashboard to gather and report data automatically for use across the firm
  • Act as a point of contact for clients to report firm’s environmental impact data and create joint sustainability programs.
  • Support all departments and practice areas in contributing to sustainability and community support initiatives
  • Participate as a member of various committees related to the management and development of sustainability and responsible business activities and programs across the firm.


Social Impact

  • Ensure that the sustainability, responsible business and community support programs adopted by the firm advance its S reputation and help to establish NRF as a leader in the social impact and sustainability fields.
  • Encourage and influence responsible business and community support interests within the firm and establish and coordinate projects to reflect these interests.
  • Coordinate with US Office Administrators to plan individual projects that meet the firm’s annual global initiatives and ensure volunteering activities are in line with the firm's policies
  • Serve as a point of contact for employees with an interest in or questions about volunteering, fundraising, or charitable activities related to global initiative.
  • Liaise with managers and teams across the firm to publicize appropriate activities and success stories within the firm.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum Five (5) years' professional work experience in a related capacity, preferably at a law firm or other professional services environment
  • Advanced user in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Microsoft Excel and data entry skills
  • Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to juggle tasks and complete work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong instinct for collaboration and teamwork across departments
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and discretion, and maintain confidentiality
  • Self-starter who takes initiative
  • Ability to prioritize work effectively to meet deadlines
  • Must be flexible to work extra hours as dictated by the demands of the role
