What Is the Opportunity?

Under general supervision, responsible for external communications and executive communications in support of business initiatives. Reporting to the Director, Communications, Canada and International, this role will manage media relations and support the CEO communications and engagement strategy for Travelers Canada. S/he will be responsible for identifying external communication needs working in partnership with Enterprise Communications, the Senior Leadership Team and Business Units (BU); development of communications strategies and plans, and execution. Partners with business, function, and initiative leaders to develop external and internal communications plans that enhance and support business objectives and strategy, while always reinforcing Travelers’ culture. This job does not manage others.


Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Working in partnership with Enterprise Communications, drive development and implementation of an external and internal communications program that directly advances business objectives and strategic priorities, while reinforcing Travelers’ culture.
  • Responsible for our local media strategy and relationships, alongside our U.S. colleagues, promoting the business while always ensuring the Travelers reputation is protected.
  • Demonstrate a general understanding of business strategies and build them into communications approaches and materials. Integrate key business messages into all communications.
  • Counsel leadership on internal communications approach and employee engagement.
  • Coordinate communications delivery across a variety of external and internal audiences, partnering with content and channel owners to ensure a comprehensive and integrated communications approach.
  • Adhere to enterprise approval processes and maintain the use of templates and brand guidelines in the development of internal communications materials.
  • Measure effectiveness of assigned internal communications through qualitative and quantitative methods. May recommend changes.
  • Perform other internal communication duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • College diploma in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or Journalism required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of proven communications and/or marketing experience, preferably in the insurance/financial services industry required.


Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • At least 8 years experience in communications
  • Experienced in insurance, financial services or B2B journalism background a plus.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with thorough knowledge of CP Style.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • General and up to date knowledge of contemporary communications techniques.
  • General and up to date knowledge of appropriate methods and techniques for communicating with multiple audiences.
  • Previous experience in a communications role in a highly matrixed work environment.
  • Demonstrates a broad enterprise perspective and understanding of how initiatives fit into the organization.
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and as a member of a team.


Job Specific Technical Skills & Competencies

  • Experienced in B2B and/or financial services; journalism background a plus.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, Salesforce, CRM programs and email deployment programs.
  • Digital strategy development and execution; research and competitive analysis capabilities as well as knowledge of brand management, website management.
  • Capable with Adobe Suite (photoshop, Premiere Pro video, InDesign).
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Intermediate interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Intermediate presentation skills.
  • Intermediate project management skills, with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, within tight timeframes. Skilled in development of metrics; dashboards.
  • Intermediate writing, editing, photography and graphic design skills.
  • Intermediate skills with digital equipment; audio, lighting, camera as well as other delivery platforms.
  • Skilled MAC computer user and related software.
  • Intermediate problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and as a member of a team (on team assignments).
  • Basic ability to think strategically.
  • Developing enterprise perspective and understanding of how initiatives fit into the organization.
