Manager, Graphics

Remote (United States)

The Graphics Manager will be responsible for the visual identity and day-to-day operations of The Athletic’s new graphics team. You will bring The Athletic’s journalism to life — on our website, app, social media and more — by managing a team of four graphics editors and data analysis experts who will be hired by you.

In this role, you can expect to build efficient workflow processes for your team, lead an effort to create a style library for all graphics projects, mentor and edit direct reports, discuss and project manage data viz led initiatives with newsroom editors, assign work to your team and execute some projects yourself.

To succeed, you should be a highly-organized project manager and creative multitasker with the ability to lead by example and consistently inspire your team to create compelling design and data-driven solutions. You should be collaborative and flexible, willing to dive into any stage of a project to help level up the work. You should be perceptive and detail-oriented with a great mind for conceptual thinking and realizing the vision of the project at hand.

This role will report to The Athletic’s Editorial Director of Design and Visuals and is a fully remote position for candidates located in the United States or Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the strategy and execution of data and graphics focused journalism, special projects and design systems.
  • Identify workflow inefficiencies as they arise and implement solutions that lead to better collaboration, production and design.
  • Lead the creation of evergreen, data-driven destinations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional newsroom, engineering and product partners to ensure continuity across platforms and publishing spaces.
  • Ideate with and edit your team to maintain The Athletic’s high-caliber storytelling and visual identity.
  • Manage and mentor your team, creating a strong sense of purpose, community and journalistic excellence.
  • Thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience, including time working as a graphics editor or graphics director in a newsroom or similar environment.
  • Experience managing a team with concurrent, on-going projects.
  • Experience managing the development of interactive graphics or Web sites.
  • Experience working and collaborating with Product and Engineering teams.
  • A deep understanding of and an appreciation for journalism, design and data, including data analysis languages and methods of acquiring data, like coding and scraping.
  • The ability to shape data-based journalism using innovative approaches to storytelling.
  • An outstanding portfolio showcasing relevant work.
  • Strong interpersonal, project management, presentation, leadership and communication skills.
  • The ability to adapt and think quickly when projects change, timelines shift or scopes vary.
  • A high standard of journalistic and creative quality for yourself and others while finding the best solutions to meet newsroom and company-wide goals.

The annual base salary range for this role is $120,000.00 - $160,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits.
