Manager, Environmental Operations and Emergency Response

Fremont, CA

The Environmental Operations and Emergency Response Manager will report directly to the Sr. Environmental Affairs Manager. The Environmental Operations and Emergency Response Manager will have responsibility for managing a team of Hazardous Waste/Environmental Operations Supervisors, their teams of Environmental Coordinators and Environmental/HazWaste Technicians, and all tasks associated with the collection, storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous waste and materials generated within Tesla facilities located across the Bay Area.


The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator, self-driven and works well in cross-functional team environments. The ideal candidate must demonstrate analytical abilities, effective planning, and organizational skills, and has experience as an effective leader. The role will manage and support spill prevention, control, and countermeasure (SPCC), and industrial and construction stormwater programs. This position is based in Fremont, CA and will involve occasional travel to Lathrop, Livermore, Pleasanton, and other Fremont locations. 


What You’ll Do

  • Ensure routine environmental compliance inspections are conducted at all locations;
  • Manage several waste storage areas and several waste processing operations;
  • Lead and implement plans to drive site performance and reduce hazardous and universal waste operational costs;
  • Ensure environmental technicians are well-trained on proper OSHA safety guidelines, State and Federal Regulations pertaining to Hazardous and Universal Waste Disposal, Hazardous Materials, and Department of Transportation regulations for proper loading, marking, handling, and transporting of hazardous material/waste containers;
  • Track hazardous and non-hazardous waste generation, storage and disposal for Tesla as required by local, state, and federal law;
  • Create and maintain all records associated with hazardous waste generation including manifests, LDRs, waste determinations and profiles, accumulation logs, inventories, and inspection reports;
  • Coordinate with multiple third-party waste vendors;
  • Partner with compliance staff to create profiles of waste streams with vendors to find the most efficient and cost-effective option for all generated waste;
  • Assist compliance staff in preparation of Biennial Report and SB-14 Waste Minimization Plans and Reports, and projects associated with waste reduction;
  • Manage hazardous and universal waste budget, including processing purchase orders and invoices;
  • Support team production of monthly waste metrics for various facilities;
  • Perform auditing and routine visits of TSDFs;
  • Implement, monitor, and ensure compliance with Tesla Standard Operating Procedures;
  • Lead emergency response and SPCC efforts related to accidental hazardous material and oil spills. Advises and coordinates spill response activities and other emergency response activities associated with hazards on production lines in coordination with Tesla fire response, security, and emergency medical teams. Must be available to be on-call 24/7 and advise team accordingly as unexpected incidents occur;
  • Manage battery teardown team and processes to support internal battery recycling program. Ensure all material is properly labeled, inventoried, tracked, and packaged in accordance with regulatory requirements;
  • Manage industrial and construction stormwater programs, including maintaining BMPs, facilitating collection of samples, data analysis, and driving key projects to support California’s Stormwater Industrial and Construction General Permit (IGP and CGP) requirements; and,
  • Responsible for setting both personal and organizational goals for the team and establishing a culture where personal growth and development is critical to team success.


What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science or similar, Master’s degree preferred;
  • CHMM Certification is highly desirable;
  • QISP Certification is highly desirable;
  • 5+ years of experience in managing hazardous waste programs;
  • 3+ years of experience working in a manufacturing environment;
  • Knowledge of SPCC and Stormwater requirements;
  • Experience in data analysis and development of metrics and KPIs;
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER Certification required or ability to obtain;
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure; and, 
  • Ability to positively interface, partner, collaborate with various stakeholders and teams.

Expected Compensation

$84,000 - $222,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits


Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
