What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a dynamic environmental professional to join the Tesla Giga Factory Texas Environmental, Health and Safety Team (EHS). The role will manage environmental programs at Tesla’s manufacturing and related sites in Texas.


Reporting to the Sr. EHS Manager for Texas manufacturing, the Environmental Manager will manage environmental compliance and risk management programs and teams. Be part of the Tesla EHS Team that builds capacity, provides solutions, and drives continuous improvement throughout the Global Tesla Organization.


What You’ll Do

  • Manage a team of environmental managers, engineers, specialists, and technicians and all environmental programs applicable to Tesla’s manufacturing operations in Texas. Environmental programs include: Air emissions, Hazardous waste and industrial waste, Industrial wastewater, Industrial and construction storm water, Hazardous materials reporting under Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA), including spill release notifications and follow-up reports as required (TCEQ etc.), Oil Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC), Hazardous materials storage requirements as defined by Tesla fire protection engineers, Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA), Risk Management Planning, and Environmental Sustainability
  • Manage hazardous waste operations performance and drive reductions in hazardous and universal waste generation rates and associated operational costs
  • Leverage Tesla’s EHS management software to track: All regulatory reporting deadlines to assure deliverables are completed within required timeframes, including, but not limited to the following reports: biennial hazardous waste, Toxics Release Inventory, quarterly wastewater self-monitoring, greenhouse gas emissions, Emissions Inventory, and Title V annual and semi-annual. Environmental inspections including storm water, SPCC, hazardous and industrial waste, and environmental compliance. Environmental events and related actions
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including, but not limited to legal, EHS, sustainability-impact, policy, plant operations, manufacturing engineering, production, and workplace teams with a goal of continuous improvement for environmental program site performance
  • Act as the primary liaison for regulatory agency inspections, including TCEQ, EPA, Austin Water, City of Austin, Fish & Wildlife Service, etc.
  • Track new projects or changes to existing manufacturing processes to effectively manage impacts to environmental permitting and compliance
  • Establish GFTX environmental OKRs and drive efforts to deliver Global and GFTX Key Results


What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or other Environmental-related discipline, or equivalent
  • Minimum 10 years of experience managing environmental programs and professionals Professional certifications such as Professional Engineer, Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Auditor
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, meet demanding deadlines, and manage multi-faceted projects in a fast-paced environment, where demands and priorities change rapidly
  • Ability to communicate effectively with production employees, engineers, legal counsel, technical specialists, and management, cross functionally, in a multi-disciplinary, global environment
  • Foundational knowledge of Texas and Federal environmental regulations and programs
  • General understanding of sustainability and environmental topics and fundamentals including sustainable design, planning, policy, waste, greenhouse gases/energy, responsible material sourcing, water, land use change, biodiversity, and EHS certification systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills / effective project management experience
