Manager, Communications and Digital Media

The Communications Manager, Girl Up will play an important and significant role managing storytelling strategy and supporting internal communication across Girl Up's departments and global regions. She/he will also collaborate with Girl Up Programs and Development teams and the UN Foundation, especially with members of public affairs. The Manager will be a strong project manager, and champion of data-based decision-making, with experience leading teams — both a strategist and (ad hoc) implementer. The Communications Manager will report to the Deputy Director Communications and Digital Media and oversee Girl Up’s visual branding team, managing project and campaign deliverables across our digital media platforms.


This position is based in Washington, DC


Essential Functions

  • Manage strategy and implementation of Girl Up’s communications and digital media strategy across traditional and online media platforms with oversight
  • Develop and maintain review and approval systems, processes, and workflows
  • Draft and edit written strategy materials, communications plans, and content as needed across Girl Up teams
  • Manage production of deliverables related to campaigns, key moments, and day-to-day content
  • Collaborate with Girl Up’s partnerships and fundraising team for implementation of communications for key Girl Up partnerships
  • Contribute to partner communications management and attend partner meetings and events representing the communications team
  • Work closely with Program Coordinators and Associates to coordinate Girl Up Community storytelling priorities
  • Manage vendor relationships, as needed, for communications team
  • Manage development of messaging for social media kits and press kits
  • Support on social media posting and scheduling, as needed
  • Support email coding, reporting, and segmentation, as needed
  • Oversee reporting for communications metrics and KPIs
  • Contribute to Girl Up’s action plan to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the workplace and across communications and storytelling with oversight from the Girl Up leadership team
  • Keep up to date on communications and digital industry standards and trends.
  • Manage communications interns
  • Attend and cover live events as applicable
  • Other projects and duties as assigned


Selection Criteria

  • Minimum 6-8 years of experience in communications and digital media, in publishing or  outlet, at a PR agency, or NGO setting
  • 1-2 years of management experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Public Relations, International Relations or related field preferred
  • Excellent writing skills — experience writing and editing op-eds, blogs, press releases, and editorial content for a brand, organization, or thought leader
  • Experience driving impactful storytelling strategy
  • Strong media relations background and experience working with press
  • Experience working as part of a partner or client-facing communications team
  • Strong skills working in diverse, international teams and across many types of organizations
  • Team-oriented; problem solver; relationship-builder; and strong inter-personal skills
  • Ability to multitask in a very fast-paced, often rapidly changing environment
  • Basic proficiency Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office Suite
  • Sense of humor, creative energy and a great team player
  • Experience maintaining and managing organizational social networking accounts preferred
  • Experience writing and editing educational materials and curricula preferred
  • Proficiency in email marketing platforms (e.g., Convio Luminate Online, EveryAction, Campaign Monitor, Pardot, or similar tools), CRM (Salesforce preferred), and CMS platforms (WordPress) preferred
  • Experience producing and editing video content preferred
  • Familiarity with global humanitarian and gender equality issues and issues affecting girls and women globally preferred
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress
  • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy
  • A skill assessment is part of the interview process for this role
