Legal Director

New York, NY

The Delivery Legal Team serves as front-line legal support for the development and growth of Uber’s Delivery businesses. This committed, collaborative team provides high quality product and commercial advice that ensures the expertise of Uber's entire Legal Department is brought to bear on the partnerships, products, processes, and systems that power the expanding Delivery business.

About the Role

We’re looking for an exceptional attorney to lead commercial support for several of Uber’s biggest growth Delivery businesses, including several that are scaling globally and rapidly – from Grocery, Retail, Convenience and Alcohol to Direct (white label) delivery. The Delivery Legal team supports these businesses centrally, including for US operations and through global coordination. Commercial legal leadership for this business requires a strategic approach to developing the partnerships, structures and internal processes vital to introduce key merchants to our platform – from grocers to retailers to large enterprise partnerships that rely upon the Uber platform to support their fulfillment needs across a variety of industries – while offering the best selection to customers that rely upon Uber to go anywhere and get anything delivered.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide oversight and direction to the commercial team supporting Uber’s Grocery, Retail, Convenience, Alcohol and Direct lines of business
  • Manage deals end-to-end (from deal analysis to post-deal management) with cross-functional input and collaboration
  • Streamline deal processes and establish contracting standards and principles that can scale globally
  • Negotiate and support commercial structures necessary to deliver innovative Delivery products on the Uber platform, from Grocery and Retail to Convenience, Alcohol and Direct delivery (white label fulfillment for large enterprise partners)
  • Draft master framework, master services, promotional, and licensing agreements, terms and conditions, and other policies governing the use of Uber products and services, all with a full-view integration of risk and legal controls
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues on other legal teams at Uber, including specialists across IP, Employment, Privacy and Data Security, Litigation and Competition
  • Understand, interpret and apply the current laws and regulations relevant to Uber’s business models in commercial agreements and relationships
  • Be an active and trusted business partner to a wide variety of leaders and stakeholders across the Delivery business. It's our job to peer around corners for the business and ensure that we are well-positioned for the future
  • Create and implement policies and practices to ensure consistent implementation of legal guidance and alignment on risks
  • Be a strong communicator and collaborator to support and develop a high-performing, diverse team that achieves our legal and business priorities

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of 12+ years of commercial legal experience in private practice and/or in-house
  • J.D. and license to practice law in at least one state

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with drafting and negotiating a variety of complex and commercial agreements
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team
  • Strong team orientation, with confidence and flexibility to perform in forward-thinking, constantly evolving and growing environments
  • Collaborative approach with both business and legal groups, with strong ability to build relationships, gain credibility, and partner with others
  • Superior analytical and legal skills, mature judgment, innovative thinking and a desire to take the initiative and think two steps ahead
  • Ability to translate complex legal issues and ambiguity into clear and simple advice, to communicate effectively with non-legal internal colleagues, and to collaborate with a broad range of senior business managers, executives and other colleagues and professionals across our company
  • Familiarity with deal structures that facilitate the sale of products and services in regulated and international markets
  • Passionate about your work and a desire to have a big impact
  • Enthusiasm about Uber and our mission!
