Legal Communications Manager

San Francisco, CA

We are looking for an experienced communications professional to join our team to develop and manage communications for the Legal & Government Affairs department, and to partner with our Chief Legal Officer (CLO) on their executive communications strategy. Our ideal candidate brings strategic thinking, intellectual curiosity, energy, creativity, and is policy curious. This role reports into the Director of Legal Operations and will partner with the executive communications team.


  • Develop an internal communications strategy and create content to help inform the Legal team, run by our CLO, and drive the message of the organization across the company
  • For the legal communications plan, this may include: quarterly all hands, the department’s newsletter, promotion announcements, ask-me-anything (AMA) sessions, consistently formatted and on-brand templates, and management of internal and external facing websites for the department
  • For the CLO executive communications plan, this may include: developing a CLO narrative in partnership with the Exec communications team, social media support, helping with external speaking opportunities, thought leadership, writing general communication to the department, and development of an editorial calendar
  • For the Government Affairs & Public Policy team, this may include developing policy related communications and collateral for the greater Autodesk community
  • Deeply embed in the organization and participate in meetings as requested with CLO and Legal leadership, helping shape strategy, providing a point of view (POV) on what and how news and information should be communicated, and debating that POV with direct staff
  • Work closely with the Autodesk executive communications team and with partners across the company on communications projects as needed and in the best interests of the company and its employees
  • Work directly with our CLO and key subject-matter experts to develop the narrative arcs for and create presentations and talks to be given to customers, shareholders, and employees
  • Develop ways to reuse this content by other leaders within Legal and in other parts of the company
  • Ensure internal messages are communicated through various channels in a clear, timely and effective manner, using a high-impact writing style and format
  • Continually improve, measure, and evaluate effectiveness of communications strategy and methods
  • Pitch in where appropriate to help teammates out on high-priority communications & events-related projects

Minimum Qualifications

  • Excellent writer, with the skills to distill complex content into clear, concise and engaging communications, and able to write with speed and accuracy
  • Understanding of the legal and policy issues facing the software and technology space- understanding of Autodesk’s business and industries
  • Legal knowledge/understanding of data and privacy strongly preferred
  • Strategic and creative thinker comfortable debating and defending their ideas
  • Strong storyteller with the ability to create compelling narratives in support of our business strategies
  • Experience developing and executing communications strategies, plans, programs, and events
  • Strong presence and confidence which will help build high credibility with senior executives
  • Ability to influence without authority, across functions, geographies and levels, and the ability to work with various departments and teams to drive alignment and collaboration
  • Ability to be flexible, proactive, work under deadlines, and ensure quality and accuracy
  • Focused and performance-driven
  • Strong attention to detail and project management skills
  • 5+ years of experience in communications and/or employee communications
  • Exceptional PowerPoint skills, knowledge of the MS Teams, Proze, and SharePoint is a plus
  • Four-year college degree (BS or BA), preferably in English, communications or journalism; or equivalent work experience and excellent writing and communications skills
  • Occasional travel required; will need to commute periodically into San Francisco location
