Lead Software Engineer

The Overwatch team is seeking a highly skilled engineer to serve as Lead Gameplay Engineer.


Soldiers, scientists, adventurers, oddities…engineers! We are the Overwatch team, passionate gamers at heart, and we’re looking for a new hero to help us make Overwatch 2 - the globe-spanning sequel to Blizzard Entertainment’s acclaimed team-based game.


In Overwatch 2, the nations of Earth are under assault. As the omnic forces of Null Sector launch a barrage of surprise attacks around the world, the planet’s governments and militaries prove quickly outmatched—and the remnants of the fearless strike force once known as Overwatch rally to make a valiant stand.


Now the world’s heroes must each decide whether to answer the call to reemerge, reunite, and serve as a beacon of hope in a new era of crisis.

As a gameplay lead on the Overwatch team, you will be part of a talented and passionate team developing world class PvE and PvP gameplay experiences, unlocking the potential of our engineers, designers and artists to create compelling and exciting gameplay features that will keep players engaged for years to come. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the challenges involved with authoring game systems, be comfortable leading a team of engineers, and be able to collaborate closely with other disciplines.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with our associate technical director to contribute to the technical direction for the gameplay team across all platforms.
  • Collaborate with the design team to achieve and extend the overall vision of the game.
  • Evaluate and upgrade the technical skills of engineers on the gameplay team.
  • Work with other leads and producers to establish game related tasks and schedules.
  • Understand and articulate the tradeoffs of technical choices in support of a live game.
  • Provide critical analysis of development practices with the goal of improving game quality, team efficiency, and fostering a positive working environment.


Requirements

  • Previous leadership experience
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in AAA game development
  • Experience with code and data optimization
  • Fluency in C / C++
  • Strong programming skills and a proven ability to work with all departments to carry out the vision of the game
  • Experience in the design and architecture of game systems
  • Experience with developing multiplayer games
  • Self-motivated and self-directing, willing to pitch in on many areas of development
  • Must be comfortable working within (and extending) an established code framework
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Passion for video games


Pluses 

  • Computer science or related degree
  • Passion for technology
  • Experience with first person shooter game development
  • Experience developing for multiple platforms
  • AI and/or animation experience
  • Familiar with Blizzard games


**Irvine/southern California is preferred, but remote may be considered**
