Lead Software Engineer

If you’re a lead Java software engineer with Endur and energy trading experience, this role will provide you with an opportunity to shape a greenfield Endur implementation. This innovative implementation will define and adopt best practice in every aspect of the project, providing exceptional learning and growth opportunities for the right individual. You’ll be developing your existing team leadership skills, as well as mentoring agile teams in areas such as Kafka integration, Azure Monitor & Insights, logging frameworks, and OpenComponents. You’ll lead your teams as they build out (and upon) a set of foundational capabilities which will ultimately underpin all Endur instances in the Shell Energy Trading space.

Shell Energy is part of Shell’s Trading & Supply division. Our focus is on natural gas, power, LNG and environmental products markets through major hubs in London, Houston, Dubai, Singapore and Brisbane.


Shell Energy has significant growth ambitions over the coming years. In order to meet our company’s growth and decarbonisation targets, we are embarking on a major programme of work to modernise our Energy Trading Risk Management System (ETRM) platform.


This multi-year programme will initially involve the replacement of old, legacy ETRM systems in Europe and North America. Our intent is to implement new cloud hosted (Azure) Endur systems, utilising the latest in streaming data technologies and system integration and connectivity methodologies. At the same time, we need to support our growing Asian and Australian gas and power businesses and our world leading LNG trading businesses by sustaining and enhancing our current version 19 Endur system.


We are looking for ETRM specialists seeking a significant challenge and an opportunity to grow their careers as part of a team intent on pushing the boundaries of ETRM systems. That team sits at the core of an industry leading organisation at the very heart of the energy transition; helping to ensure a brighter future for everyone.


What’s the role?

As lead Java Software Engineer, you will direct and nurture Endur developers across several Agile teams. Each team is responsible for the development and maintenance of one or more ETRM feature areas. Feature areas will be aligned to a specific commodity (Power, Gas or Environmental Products) and/or a specific functional area (for example, Front, Middle, Back-Office, or integration).


Joining at the start of this ambitious programme, you would work with your teams to develop and adopt foundational config, logging, monitoring and integration approaches whilst delivering feature solutions and value to the business.


These Agile DevOps teams will follow CI/CD practices and be responsible for features from inception, through development to deployment, operations and support. A sense of team ownership and empowerment will be fostered.


Typically, you would perform the following day to day activities:

  • Coaching and mentoring your teams
  • Ensuring teams follow applicable standards for architecture, design, testing, documentation, security and coding practices
  • Ensuring adherence to, and improvement of CI/CD processes by your teams  
  • Encouraging teams to adopt innovative approaches to existing problems or new opportunities
  • Continuous improvement to teams’ effort estimation
  • Requirements gathering from end-users or business analysts
  • Formulate design & development based on functional requirements
  • Endur plugin development in OpenJVS & OpenComponents
  • External application development in OpenComponents
  • Ensuring development includes appropriate coverage in terms of Unit, Integration & Performance testing
  • Leading PoCs (Proof of Concepts)
  • Ensuring technical documentation in place for developed solutions
  • Facilitating continuous improvement to sprint demos and peer code reviews
  • Managing the troubleshooting and remediation of production issues


What we need from you?

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • Minimum of 15 years of work experience in Endur projects with end-to-end trade lifecycle process.Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a track record of experience leading development teams delivering major Endur implementation programmes.
  • Must have a strong object-oriented development background with understanding and experience of concepts like dependency injection and test-driven-development.
  • Must have experience following a structured CI/CD process to ensure standards and processes are uniformly upheld.

  • Experience in Kafka is a plus
  • Experience in Monitoring solutions – Azure Insights / Grafana etc. is a plus 
  • Comfortable working for a dynamic organization with a fast-growing customer base with diverse needs.
  • ETRM/CTRM experience
  • Knowledge of the Endur application with experience developing (OpenJVS and OpenComponents) plugin-based customisations in the following areas:
  • Deal Entry
  • Operation Services
  • Event / Tran Field Notifications
  • Back Office
  • Data generation 
  • Workflow processing
  • Valuation (Reval, User Define Simulation Results, etc.)
  • Reporting


Knowledge and configuration experience of key Endur technical components including:

  • Grid
  • Domain Services (APM, Credit, Log Monitor etc.)
  • Workflows
  • Experience interfacing the Endur application with external components for the purposes of data transfer both inbound and outbound. 
  • Good knowledge of the Endur data model for transactional data, with focus on power and gas markets.
  • Good knowledge of the Endur data model for static data. 
  • Experience developing external OpenComponents applications.
  • Experience developing OpenComponents extensions e.g. Result Calculator, Curve Constructor etc.
