Laboratory Technologist Lead

Smiths Falls, ON

The Laboratory Lead, Manufacturing Process Development, is a Senior Laboratory Technician role. The responsibilities include monitoring that best practices in Health & Safety are followed and overseeing that laboratories and cannabis handling are in compliance with regulations. These duties will occupy approximately 25% of the time. The remainder of the time is spent on Laboratory Technician duties.  

 

Responsibilities 

Laboratory Lead duties

  • Oversee physical rooms, equipment, and cannabis in Manufacturing Process Development’s laboratories at Tweed Inc. Report immediately to the Director of Manufacturing Process Development should there be any issues.
  • Monitor that polices and best practices for Health & Safety are followed and ensure that any safety concerns are immediately reported to the Director of Manufacturing Process Development.
  • Perform quarterly cannabis inventory checks and reporting.
  • Receive and inventory incoming cannabis samples in all specialty licenses held by Manufacturing Process Development’s laboratories.
  • Liaising with other departments for the transfer of cannabis between licenses held by Manufacturing Process Development’s laboratories.
  • Facilitate shipping of cannabis to external partners and customers.
  • Ensure laboratories is up to room specifications.
  • Receive, document and inventory incoming laboratory equipment and materials.
  • Ensure equipment in laboratories are being maintained, verified and calibrated as outlined in respective equipment file.
  • Ensure that SOPs are being adhered to when operating under Tweed’s various cannabis licenses.
  • Maintain and update supplies and chemical inventories.
  • Assist with training/onboarding of new and existing staff, as needed.


Laboratory Technician duties

  • Plan and carry out the testing of new extraction and isolation technologies or processes.
  • Perform and troubleshoot new processes to purify and isolate cannabinoids and other compounds by chromatography, crystallization, distillation or other techniques, as appropriate.
  • Support the day-to-day operations of the Manufacturing Process Development team, including hands-on technical support for a variety of routine tasks.
  • Receive direction and objective outlines from the Director of Manufacturing Process Development.
  • Work independently on complex assignments.
  • Provide and maintain written test documentation, including up-to-date lab books containing accurate results of all experiments, tests, formulations used, analytical results, and other pertinent information for internal review and intellectual property protection.
  • Write, summarize and report on technical data. Interpret experimental or analytical results.
  • Calibrate, qualify and maintain critical equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), good laboratory practices, the Cannabis Act, and safety regulations.
  • Assist in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Maintain strict inventory control over starting materials, intermediates and finished product.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Experience

  • Post-secondary degree in biology, chemistry, food science, pharmacy, or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 3 years of cannabis process development in an industrial setting.
  • Good understanding of laboratory safety and cannabis regulations.
  • Strong skills in laboratory equipment troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Ability to work in an independent, organized, and efficient manner in a fast-paced and demanding work environment.
  • Detail-oriented and strong time management skills.
  • Must be meticulous in work and note-taking.
