Head of Sustainability & Social Impact

Who’s In the Kitchen

This position will be responsible for executing and managing a comprehensive Sustainability and Social Impact strategy and associated programs that propel business outcomes, enhance brand reputation and awareness, mitigate risk and underpin Blue Apron’s culture, values and mission. 


What’s On the Menu

Lead Sustainability and Social Impact Strategy:

  • Advance maturity of Company Sustainability and Social Impact strategy, including assessment of relevant frameworks (e.g. Environment, Social and Governance), reporting standards and best practices for disclosing key performance data.
  • Collect, analyze, evaluate and report all data pertaining to overall strategy performance and individual programs according to success metrics and make recommendations to improve outcomes and drive value. 
  • Monitor and analyze external trends and competitor landscape for insights to inform ongoing strategy development and to maintain rank as best in class. 
  • Evaluate Sustainability and Social Impact strategy on a routine basis to ensure ongoing brand, mission and voice of customer relevance.


Manage Program Implementation:

  • Prioritize and facilitate existing and new Sustainability and Social Impact programs that align with overall Sustainability and Social Impact strategy and address business risks and material issues.
  • Establish and monitor program goals, success metrics and implementation roadmaps.
  • Partner with working groups and key internal stakeholders to regularly review metrics and goals, assess progress, identify challenges and provide general support.
  • Monitor program schedules, costs and deliverables.
  • Ensure ongoing completeness of data tracking mechanisms and data accuracy to evaluate, track and report on performance and progress toward achieving goals. 
  • Identify and work proactively to resolve any risks or failure to make progress toward achieving goals. 
  • Be the lead point of accountability with third-party firms related to Sustainability and Social Impact programs to ensure strategic alignment and delivery of quality work.


Foster a Sustainability and Social Impact Culture and Employee Engagement:

  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to champion Sustainability and Social Impact work at Blue Apron and ensure Sustainability and Social Impact priorities are embedded in Company culture.
  • Create and distribute educational materials, progress reports and other methods for building internal awareness of Sustainability and Social Impact programs and results at Blue Apron.
  • Integrate employee engagement opportunities in Sustainability and Social Impact programs.
  • Collaborate with the Human Resources, Director of Internal Communications and other stakeholders to measure and monitor program impact on Blue Apron employees across the Company, including hearing and considering employee suggestions for program expansion and / or improvements. 


Support Brand and Marketing Strategy and Communications and IR/Legal around Sustainability and Social Impact:

  • Collaborate with the Brand and Marketing teams to maintain effective and consistent Sustainability and Social Impact marketing strategies and key messages across paid and owned channels. 
  • Provide regular updates to ensure that all communications are accurate and current.
  • Collaborate with Brand, Marketing and Voice of Customer teams to monitor performance of Sustainability and Social Impact messages and integrate into future strategy development. 
  • Share information pertaining to all of Blue Apron’s Sustainability and Social Impact programs including analyzing and verifying data.
  • Assist in generating Sustainability and Social Impact content including but not limited to Board of Director presentations, Company All-Hands, annual sustainability reports and other non-financial reporting. 
  • Assist in designing Sustainability and Social Impact disclosures and communications for investor relations purposes. 


Provide External Representation:

  • Serve as Company subject matter expert and spokesperson as needed.
  • Identify and participate in opportunities to promote broad awareness of Blue Apron’s Sustainability and Social Impact work.
  • Identify, establish and manage partnerships with external stakeholders across sectors to enhance program credibility.
