Global Senior Environmental Manager

Environment, Health Safety, and Sustainability (EHSS) are core to Whirlpool’s Mission and foundational values. The Global Senior Environmental Manager role will directly support and report to the Head of Global EHSS to:

  • Provide leadership on all aspects of compliance related to global environmental regulations and environmental policies to drive compliance.
  • Development and oversight of Whirlpool’s environmental standards.
  • Accountable for identifying and managing significant environmental aspects;
  • Keeping accurate and complete environmental reporting of metrics;
  • Assuring that environmental assessments are thoroughly completed on a timely basis;
  • Completion of required training;
  • Managing interfaces with governmental authorities in coordination with our EHSS legal support;
  • Investigation into areas of potential EHSS non-compliance to determine potential legal ramifications, develop strategies to correct noncompliance and provide guidance to operations on potential liabilities.
  • Providing subject matter expertise to the Global Environmental Core Competency Team (CCT)

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and direction to Global team members/ Program owners for Environment Regulatory.
  • Embed World Class Manufacturing ENVIRONMENTAL and ENERGY Pillar requirements into Global EHS Management System and governance standards.
  • Monitor EHS performance and provide Global EHS communication/reports to Leadership, including KPIs/KAIs, key initiatives, and Board of Directors support
  • Assess future risks and opportunities & reflect necessary changes within the Global EHS Strategy
  • Develop and deploy environmental assessment protocols.  Provide environmental assessment training and conduct assessments at various locations. Assist sites with their licenses and permitting requirements as needed.
  • Develop and manage systems and practices that encourage continual improvement in environmental performance at each of the operating units.  Facilitates evaluation and implementation of fiscally and socially responsible methods of reducing environmental footprint.  Provides direction around environmental opportunities in the reduction of air emissions, water, and waste in support of the World Class Manufacturing (WCM) process and Whirlpool commitments and yearly targets.  
  • ISO14001 – Develop/maintain standardized programs and processes that help obtain & maintain ISO 14001 certification. Work with ISO 14001 certification body to obtain and/or continue certification.
  • ISO 50001 - Develop/maintain standardized programs and processes that help obtain & maintain ISO 50001 certification. Work with ISO 50001 certification body to obtain and/or continue certification.
  • Develop and maintain handling methodology, standardization & mitigation aligned with regulatory, WCM and Whirlpool standards and commitments.
  • Develop and promote water usage reduction programs and processes that supports WCM and Whirlpool commitments and targets.
  • Environmental requirement risk assessments
  • Develop and maintain process alignment in support of local regulations and/or Whirlpool standards
  • Develop environmental training programs that meet or exceed federal, state, and/or local requirements. Develop and provide train-the-trainer programs to cascade training to those within the organization.
  • Supports response actions to emergency situations dealing with the environment, employees, or the community. Collaboratively work with the operations team to develop and deploy business continuity programs.
  • Build organizational capability by providing environmental training and development of EHS professionals to ensure each site within the organization has the appropriate technical and functional competencies.
  • Travel a minimum of 50% of the time, internationally is required.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor degree in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Biology or Geology
  • 10+ years international experience with environmental regulations and oversight of global processes for environmental management
  • Experience working across a matrixed global organization

 

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • ISO14001 and/or Environmental Compliance Lead Assessor
  • Form, lead, motivate, and direct a strong and effective team
  • Knowledge and application of safety and environmental management systems
  • Lean Manufacturing/ World Class Manufacturing Methodology
  • Global acumen at all levels of the organization and an ability to establish credibility and drive change within the organization
  • Implementing change on a large scale
  • Written and verbal communication skills
