The Global Director, Sustainability will be part of the Enterprise Sustainability team reporting into the Senior Director, Sustainability & Engagement. This person will be responsible for defining and refining an environmental sustainability strategy and integration of those strategies into our Medical Devices (MD) segment business priorities and goals, working closely with a broad group of internal and external stakeholders. We are seeking a team member to take proactive initiative to understand and address the sustainability needs of key healthcare customers across regions, develop the business case and value proposition for sustainability for our MD businesses, and drive alignment with key senior and mid-level business leaders and cross-functional stakeholders. This role will keep abreast of external trends and customer insights, assess needs and gaps, define key priorities for sustainable products & solutions, and will own the integration of sustainability into the MD business strategy. In addition, the Global Director, Sustainability will help to position J&J and J&J MD Companies (JJMDC) as a leader in sustainability in relevant industry groups, conferences and thought leadership platforms.


Responsibilities:

Strategy & Governance

  • Assess and refine the current MD sustainability strategy & priorities and develop key goals/metrics for JJMDC including integrating into overall MD ESG strategy. Gain alignment and support with critical internal leadership teams, including MD sustainability sponsors, commercial, and cross functional business leaders across franchises.
  • Develop the business and value case to integrate sustainability into segment business strategy and priorities, including supporting creation of MD franchise external sustainability goals for sustainable products & solutions.
  • Engage with our global and regional J&J Customer teams internally and externally to understand our customers’ priorities, needs, and initiatives around sustainability.
  • Monitor the dynamic and growing external trends and stakeholders’ expectations for healthcare sustainability and identify relevant insights that will help us stay competitive, and future proof our business.
  • Support franchise sustainability teams/leaders (e.g., Ethicon Sustainability Activation lead) as well as regional Sustainability roles in the regions and ensure alignment with the Global MD and overall Enterprise strategy.
  • Be the dot connector between MD cross functional teams and the Enterprise Sustainability technical SMEs.
  • Partner with product development and cross functional teams to integrate environmental sustainability into NPD pipelines/processes by developing and/or supporting with the execution of environmental impact assessment methodologies and tools.
  • Contribute to Enterprise Sustainability strategy development, envisioning and shaping the future of sustainability in the healthcare sector.


Customer Engagement & Support 

  • Shape and participate in regional and functional sustainability advisory boards to gather insights to inform strategy and messaging.
  • Support global customer inquiries and work with regional customer teams and contract/ tender teams on EPP (Environmental Preferred Purchasing) responses. Identify needs/gaps to help evolve our MD sustainability capabilities, processes and data related to product transparency/disclosure.
  • Support the development and execution of a sustainability data strategy specifically for products/packaging to help with customer/commercial team needs and ensure solutions are embedded into our business processes and systems.
  • Create proof-points, case studies, and internal/ external stories around sustainability to showcase value to our customers.


Communications & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Partner with business, communications, and legal teams to develop guidance, capabilities and toolkits for sustainability claims relevant for medical devices and technology, given the current lack of standards and industry guidance.
  • Manage and connect to healthcare external environment through active membership with industry organizations, non-profit groups, and trade organizations and Key Opinion Leaders.
  • Create visibility and awareness of J&J’s and MD’s specific sustainability vision, strategy and achievements to internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Minimum of 10 years of business related experience leading initiatives with cross functional teams (communicating effectively with multiple stakeholders at different levels in complex business settings).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Marketing and/or Commercial roles such as Customer Engagement, Strategy Development and/or Sustainability.
  • Experience in shaping complex global and/or regional programs and orchestrate their implementation in a matrix organization.
  • This position may require up to 25% domestic and international travel.

 

Preferred:

  • An advanced degree (Master’s or PhD).
  • Experience in the B2B Healthcare/Hospital/Medical Devices/MedTech industry.
  • Advanced proficiency in Project Management, Change Management and/or Process Improvement.
  • Financial acumen and business case development experience.
  • Experience as an End-to-end business thinker and leader.
