Financial Accounting Manager

The Financial Accounting Manager (FAM) is a hands-on position that was initially created to support KQED’s Campaign 21 (C21) program which began in 2014 with a primary focus that included raising funds for reconstruction of its headquarters at 2601 Mariposa Street, San Francisco, the advancement of new technologies within the industry and providing fiscal support for existing programs.


The fundraising component of C21 is largely completed but the task of financial administration of the program remains. Being that the organization is in the latter stages of the campaign this allows for strategic expansion of this position into areas of the finance department where resources have been stretched or unavailable and in need of additional attention and oversight in order to operate more efficiently. 


The FAM will (1) manage the accounting and forecasting activities of C21 (in conjunction with the Development department and Financial Services Team), (2) oversee and manage restricted Campaign 21 and operating funds, (3) work collaboratively with departmental staff in the areas of revenue/cash receipts, and (4) reconcile donor equity contributions and grant and project activities

This role will work hybrid between working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working remotely. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.


Essential Functions: The principal responsibilities entailed within this position include the following:

  • Accounting for C21 and restricted operating cash receipts, pledges, revenue, expenditures and resulting net assets and appropriate account reconciliations with general ledger balances.
  • In conjunction with the Controller and Assistant Controller, review donor gift documentation and restrictions to accurately record revenue, including discount and amortization on long-term pledges.
  • Review monthly expenditures and prepare journal entries to release temporarily restricted cash funds and net assets for C21 and restricted operating funds.
  • Develop, prepare and maintain C21 finance schedules to cumulatively track revenue, expenses, pledge receivables, cash and net assets.
  • With Development and responsible Financial Services Group (FSG) staff, prepare and maintain cash flow projections, pertaining to C21 program and capital spending functions. This includes long-term cash, revenue and expenditure forecasts. (C21 expenditure information is obtained from the Adaptive Insights application).
  • Completion of quarterly board of director reports for certain C21 restricted funding.
  • Maintain C21 donor documentation with attention focused on possible restrictions placed on contributions by donors.
  • Prepare reports of C21 activity and analysis as requested by management and/or donors.
  • Participate in regular C21 revenue budget and forecasting meetings with Development staff.
  • Work with Finance staff during the monthly financial close to ensure timely and accurate reporting of C21 results to both internal and external parties.
  • Work with the Assistant Controller to monitor jointly funded projects that include C21 and operational support.
  • Assist with annual audits and external reporting especially as it pertains to C21 and restricted operating funds.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Controller and Chief Financial Officer.
  • In collaboration with Revenue Accountant, process daily cash receipts (i.e., cash, checks, EFT, and credit card transactions) and ensure proper coding in the general ledger and revenue recognition in compliance with GAAP.
  • Review daily cash receipts (i.e., cash, checks, and EFT) entered by Membership and Development in CRM software (Revolution Online) for proper coding and revenue recognition in compliance with GAAP and import ROI data file into the GL software (Intacct)
  • Review supporting documentation to ensure accurate GL coding and compliance with GAAP, including donor-restrictions and audit requirements
  • Identify donor-restricted funds and coordinate wire transfers between banking institutions, and prepare journal entry
  • Communicate effectively with other departments regarding GL coding issues, and to provide support for their records
  • Investigate, answer and resolve internal and external payment inquiries in a timely manner
  • Reconcile revenue between CRM software and GL software
  • Monthly stock reconciliation of the Charles Schwab statement to cash received by donor, amount, type of stock and shares of stock.
  • Support the Assistant Controller with grants and project activities. This includes but is not limited to assistance in the following:
  • Update monthly Grants Workbook used to track revenue recognition, release of funds/net assets, cash flow, and grant compliance
  • In collaboration with Development and Production and Finance Operations teams, compile and review funder reports and ensure reconciliation with the general ledger, as well as monthly net asset releases
  • Other grant and project duties as assigned
