Fabricator, Design

As a Studio Specialist, Design Engineer you will be responsible for building models/ vehicles from design data and processing it to be manufactured into physical models and parts, both static and functioning (chassis, lighting, etc.). These would range from foam mockups to fully functioning show finished prototype vehicles. The ideal candidate should have a background in mechanical  engineering and basic knowledge of metal fabrication. We work fast and efficient under tight timelines while retaining the highest quality. The role will require being able to collaborate with designers and engineers to come up with the best design possible.


Responsibilities

Knowledge in the following manufacturing techniques and design:

Tooling/mold design:

  • Designing male/female tooling, splitting tools or adding inserts to eliminate die lock and making layup/part removal efficient
  • Designing tools for composites, glass, forming, cast urethanes, and vacuum forming
  • Surface offsetting for material thicknesses and final finishes (wrap, paint)


Rapid prototyping:

  • Designing solid, water-tight objects for printing in SLA, FDM, Polyjet, and DLP
  • Incorporating attachment features, locators, and screw inserts for ease of assembly of parts
  • Determining the appropriate printed material for optimum finish, strength, and function
  • Surface offsetting for material thicknesses and final finishes (Wrap, paint, chrome, vinyl)


Fabrication:

  • Creating dimensional drawings for manual milling and lathe parts
  • Designing jigs and fixtures for production as well as prototype parts/assemblies
  • Able to set up and use welding machines (MIG/ TIG)
  • Knowledge on using fabrication equipment


Minimum Qualifications

  • 3 years or more experience on designing tooling fixtures and parts for manufacturing/ R&D
  • Proficiency in one or more CAD programs – Catia V5, Rhino, Alias
  • 3 or more years of experience with fabrication equipment including MIG/ TIG welders, band saws, and conventional milling machines.
  • Strong ability to multi-task under tight deadlines
  • Must be a team player
  • Willingness to learn from each other and the entire studio to ensure product efficiencies and evolution
