Environmental Specialist

This hourly role follows the Scotts/Hawthorne step pay progression scale and typically starts at $31.25 per hour and is paid weekly. Scotts/Hawthorne will consider various factors in determining the actual pay including your skills, qualifications, experience, and geographical location.We’re looking for an Environmental Specialist to grow with us in our Marysville, OH manufacturing plant. 


If you enjoy a fast-paced, high-energy environment then you will fit in well as an Environmental Specialist for Scotts Miracle-Gro.  On a day-to-day basis you will coordinate and oversee the operations of the East Plant Tank Farm with split emphasis on EH&S program support. 


What you’ll do in this role:

  • This person will be the Scotts Subject Matter Expert for the safe handling of Sulfuric Acid, and the operations of the sulfuric acid and brine water systems.  
  • Manage unloading and offloading of raw materials (sulfuric acid) and wastewaters from the East Plant Tank Farm.
  • Manage Bill of Lading/Manifesting of shipments/tracking
  • Liaison between Operations, Quality, EHS, and Materials to build best practices
  • Collect samples of brine wastewater and process materials to build process quality reports
  • Operate and conduct routine maintenance of emission control systems (venturi, scrubber)
  • Conduct daily, weekly, monthly, etc., EHS inspections as required
  • Help monitor and maintain data and records as required by the facility’s air permit (i.e., pressure drops, flow rate, pH)
  • Participate in job function specific training including safety training
  • Manage vendors and contractors performing on-site tasks  
  • Assist with the development of job task hazard analysis, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) analysis, trials and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Must be able to regularly work flexible hours and respond to off-shift/on-call emergencies, as needed.
  • Additional duties as assigned as workload is anticipated


What you’ll need to be successful:

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety in all job aspects.
  • Mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
  • A strong attendance record and ability to work autonomously.
  • Proven organizational and time management skills. 
  • Strong communication skills with all levels of leadership, can effectively express ideas to an individual or group.
  • Learns new skills quickly and has the ability to train others.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (word, excel, PowerPoint) and Google applications.
  • Adherence to all company policies including compliance with the OSHA respiratory program which includes maintaining facial hair that allows for proper respirator fit
  • A positive attitude, good interpersonal skills, promotes teamwork, and accepts challenges.
  • The ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Prior experience working with bulk loading and unloading operations.  
  • Prior plumbing, electrical, and mechanical experience.  
  • Forklift operation experience.
  • Working knowledge of EHS regulations and standards, including DOT.
  • Training and/or experience in hazardous materials operations.
