Environmental Scientist III

Herndon, VA

AECOM is seeking an Environmental Scientist in Herdon or Arlington, VA with experience in water resources, watershed planning, and NPDES Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) compliance. In this role, the successful candidate will support water resources, watershed, and stormwater compliance projects for federal, state, and municipal clients. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 6 years of experience with municipal and federal facility stormwater programs, MS4 permits, stormwater monitoring, and TMDL planning and compliance. Experience with GIS mapping, industrial facility stormwater permitting, and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) development is also a plus. The candidate will work collaboratively with and under the supervision of a senior engineer or project manager and will be responsible for coordination and completion of various stormwater program elements required under regional MS4 Permits, Industrial Stormwater Discharge Permits, and the EPA Multi-Sector General Permit (MSGP).


Responsibilities:

  • Support high-profile, complex planning projects, such as MS4 compliance projects, watershed studies, water regional master plans, and other planning or restoration studies.
  • Support watershed and water quality assessments and conventional aspects of watershed planning and BMP prioritization
  • Provide technical support in the areas of environmental and stormwater management research, field work, stormwater analysis, and stormwater monitoring.
  • Prepare written and graphic reports and make presentations.
  • Prepare scientific documents regarding stormwater, water quality, watershed management, and best management practices.
  • Attend client meetings and coordinate with regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in local and regional water resources organizations, as appropriate on behalf of AECOM.
  • Some local travel will be required and occasional travel outside of local area may be required.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS + 4 years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • BS in Environmental Science or related field
  • US Citizen able to support federal facilities.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record.


Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ Years of experience working in with a consulting company.
  • Experience and confidence to work independently to produce high quality deliverables on time and on budget.
  • Excellent communication skills; both verbal and technical report writing
  • Ability to write well, distill supporting information in the scientific literature, communicate technical issues to a wide range of readers.
  • Strong, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working in the capacity of a team leader and/or task manager.
  • Experience developing strategies and planning documents related to stormwater management.
  • Stormwater monitoring and assessment experience
  • MS4/NPDES/TMDL/Water Quality/Watershed management experience
  • Proficient in using software applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite and ArcGIS
