What to Expect

Tesla is seeking an dynamic Environmental Engineer to join the Texas Environmental, Health and Safety Team (EHS). This role will support environmental compliance and permitting programs for Tesla’s Texas manufacturing operations. Reporting to the EHS leadership, this role will be responsible for performing technical work across a wide range of programs including environmental permitting, waste management, hazardous materials storage, water pollution prevention, and health and safety. Be part of the Tesla EHS Team that builds capacity, provides solutions, and drives continuous improvement throughout the Tesla organization.


What You’ll Do

  • Manage and continuously improve Chemical Approval program. Partner with Fire Engineers, EHS, Design Managers, and manufacturing stakeholders to ensure compliance with hazardous material storage maximum allowable quantities (MAQs) for hazard control areas and to develop new/improve existing databases for chemicals and hazardous materials while tracking purchases related to chemicals or hazardous materials
  • Manage Giga Texas’ hazardous materials inspection program and maintain Giga Texas’ hazardous material inventory data current
  • Prepare chemical inventory reports for Giga Texas including Tier I and II Chemical Inventory and Toxic Chemical Release Inventory (TRI) reports
  • Support development and implementation of hazardous materials information management software solutions
  • Implement Tesla’s Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) compliance assurance program at Giga Texas 
  • Provide information regarding chemical substance use at GFTX for TSCA Chemical Data Reporting (CDR)
  • Support all Environmental programs (Air, Wastewater, Stormwater, Waste, SPCC) as assigned by the Environmental Manager


What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Fire Protection Engineering or other Environmental-related discipline; or equivalent. Professional certifications such as E.I.T. or P.E. (Texas license preferred), CHMM, CPEA, or Certified Professional Product Steward or willingness to obtain
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience managing multi-media environmental programs, hazardous materials compliance programs 
  • Previous experience preparing TRI and Tier I and II Chemical Inventory reports, multi-media (air, water, waste compliance reporting experience is preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, meet demanding deadlines, and manage multi-faceted projects in a fast-paced environment, where demands and priorities change rapidly
  • Ability to communicate effectively with production employees, engineers, legal counsel, technical specialists, and management, cross functionally, in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Advanced knowledge in hazardous materials management and building and fire code, regulatory applicability analysis, environmental compliance reporting, data analysis
  • Working knowledge of EPA and TCEQ regulations and International Fire Code
